Nicholas Cage Stars as Truffle Hunter in Pig

Nicolas Cage is something of a silver screen enigma, having kicked off his early to mid-career with blockbuster AAA films which catapulted him into the public imagination. “Con Air,” “Snake Eyes,” “Leaving Las Vegas,” “The Rock” and “Face/Off” made Cage a star, and he was one of the hottest properties in Hollywood for a time. His newest role in “Pig” might be his biggest.

Borrowing from the box-office success that was revenge thriller “John Wick,” Cage is now set to play an irate truffle farmer who is dead-set on recovering his kidnapped pig.

The aptly named “Pig” will see Cage cast in yet another ironic role in a long line of such, according to Variety's plot synopsis.

“Cage, who is producing, will play a truffle hunter living alone in the wilderness in Oregon. When his beloved foraging pig is kidnapped, he must journey to Portland — and his long-abandoned past — to find her.”

Sounds like the heartwarming story pushed out by Keanu Reeves and company when they realized that cute little animals — in Reeves' case, his dog, and in Cage's, his highly skilled pig — are much better onscreen victims than humans. The amount of audience empathy afforded to the death of John Wick's dog was palpable, and it may be the case that Cage, who is also producing “Pig” in addition to taking the lead role, is tapping into that for this truffle-inspired caper.

The veteran action hero is coming off of some degree of success with the indie horror project “Mandy”, in which Cage played a love-struck lumberjack forced to seek restitution against a gang of wandering Manson Family-esque musicians.

It remains to be seen if “Pig” will see the same reaction from theatre-goers. While the plot synopsis seems both charming and comedic, it's hard to visualize a scenario in which this movie gets taken seriously. Having been ridiculed for his role in the critically panned “Ghost Rider” as well as other such box-office bombs as “The Wicker Man” and “Left Behind,” it's been quite the mountain to climb for Cage.

Will you buy a ticket to see the tale of Nicolas Cage, his pet pig, and the umami delicacy that is the truffle? If so, you'll likely not be alone, as the actor still has enough loyal, dedicated fans to produce at least a modest box-office rush. Hopefully the film borrows more heavily from his recent, no-holds-barred films (and the explosive blockbusters which made him famous) rather than the dull films he was making some years ago.
