Breweries With High-Intensity Workout Classes

Exercise is a divisive activity. Some people genuinely love it, thriving off the elevated endorphin levels that pump through their brains after a great gym session. For others, it’s this thing they do in order to enjoy life’s greatest pleasures – a slice of pizza, that extra glass of wine or a refreshing ice-cold beer – without feeling any self-imposed guilt.

Around the U.S., people are realizing how insanely convenient it is to combine drinking with high-intensity training, and make working out a little more pleasant. Burn a few hundred calories at SoulCycle? Great, now it’s time to go enjoy happy hour with your spin class.

Breweries are quickly catching onto this trend, offering sweat-inducing workout classes that range from vinyasa yoga to fast-paced HIIT. Beer-lovers can come in, burn some calories and then gain it all back in the form of a freshly-poured local ale — but that’s perfectly alright because you earned it!

To get you started, we compiled a list of some of the best breweries in America, combining exercising with imbibing.

Sometimes, the ultimate hair of the dog is sweating out your alcohol from the night before. Holy City Brewing in Charleston knows this — every Sunday, they co-host a Bendy Brewski Yoga and Brunch with a local yoga studio. Charlestonians come in for the 10 a.m. class, find their flow with various vinyasa poses, and then chaturanga dandasana to the bar.

The 45-minute class costs $15 and includes a 16-ounce Holy City ale. No prior sign up is required — just show up, stretch out and sweat out. Brunch is served until 3 p.m. and yogis can choose from a number of recovery beers on tap, including the classic Holy City Pilsner, the East Side Saison or the Chucktown Follicle Brown.

KegFit is a high-intensity workout that uses empty beer kegs for different circuit exercises. Empty kegs weigh about 30 pounds, so these workouts will not only burn calories but also build some serious muscle.

Boise’s Woodland Empire Ale Craft hosts classes two evenings per week for the incredible cost of only $8 — and that includes the price of the beer! KegFitters love Old Boise Lager and City of Trees IPA as their recovery beers, but Woodland is always releasing new batches for visitors to try out. To all Idahoans out there — for a price so low, what excuse do you have not to do this?

Pedals & Pints at Port City Brewing Co. - Alexandria, VA

Saturday morning is done right at Port City Brewing in Alexandria, VA. The brewery — the oldest in the D.C. area — hosts a number of exercise classes throughout the week, including Pedals & Pints, a 10-mile bike ride through the Alexandria area. Thirsty cyclists will meet at the tasting room for coffee and donuts at 10:45 a.m. (the alcohol comes later), power through the course, stop along the way for some scenic views and return for food trucks and plentiful brews.

Cyclists can sip on new releases such as the Rivershed Ale, a dry hopped pale ale made from locally-sourced malts, refreshing as a dip in the Chesapeake Bay. Port City occasionally switches up the ‘pedals’ portion of the workout, with many of the hardcore riders joining for a 30-mile course — these brave souls deserve at least three beers post-ride.

While we are in the throes of the blessed rooftop season, head to the top of Open Outcry Brewing in Chicago for some high-intensity workouts. A hotspot in Chicago’s Beverly neighborhood, Open Outcry hosts rooftop takeovers with different fitness brands — their most popular is Treadfit’s HIIT class (high-intensity interval training).

You’ll be working abs, legs, arms, chest, you name it — and it will all be worth it afterwards, when you’re gulping down an Open Outcry summer draught (the Speculator Cream Ale is especially refreshing on a warm day). When classes are over, Open Outcry brings out tables and lounge seating for HIIT participants to collapse into and enjoy the view, ice-cold beer in hand.

Controversial as CrossFit may be, the results are undeniable — it gets many participants absolutely shredded. For those less dedicated than the intense 5 a.m. CrossFit crowd, Dragoon Brewing in Tucson hosts a weekly Sunday mid-morning class in its brewhouse.

For only $10, you’ll lift, squat, jump and then sip on a tasty post-workout beer from one of Tucson's first breweries. Dragoon brews about 30 beers a year and has 11 options on tap at any given time, including its first beers ever, the Dragoon IPA and Stronghold Session Ale, so there is no shortage of CrossFit antidotes.

On the third Sunday of every month, Preyer Brewery in Greensboro hosts Pints & Pilates, a workout lower in intensity but still guaranteed to tone. The class is free, taught by local instructors, and followed by beers or mimosas. Participants simply need to bring a mat, towel and unquenchable craving for beer.

A family-owned brewery that opened just a few years ago, Preyer has quickly become the place to be for Sunday Funday in Greensboro — other Lord’s Day activities include yoga, $5 flights and lots of brunch cocktail consumption.

Burpees & Beer at 612Brew - Minneapolis, MN

Despite the name, Burpees & Beer is more than just the eponymous exercise — it includes bodyweight HIIT, bootcamp style circuits and kickboxing drills. This class at Minneapolis’ 612Brew promises to be challenging (seriously, have you ever tried to do 20 burpees in a row?), but will make you feel extra accomplished and extra thirsty.

After the sweatfest, guests can choose from one of 612Brew’s rotating draughts — some of the best in the Twin Cities — with one beer included in the class price of $15. The Shoreline Saison, an award winner and crowd favorite, tastes like lakeside bliss and will inspire sunny post-brewery plans in Minnesota.

Bikes & Brews at Hardywood Park Craft Brewery - Richmond, VA

The best part of Hardywood Brewery’s bikes & Brews class is that you don’t even have to leave the brewery. Local studio Flow Cycle brings in their own stationary bikes, so spinners are within just a few steps from their post-workout ales. The class consists of 20 minutes on the bike, 20 minutes on the mat and a cold beer to finish off the session.

Hardywood prides itself on brewing beers with a purpose, focusing on environmental stewardship and community engagement (along with making damn good beers). These monthly exercise classes are just one example of this, and a great way to show off their delicious Virginia-sourced suds.

Whether you live near one of these locations or you’re looking for a fun activity to incorporate into your summer travel plans, be sure to keep the brewery-fitness class in mind this season. After a good workout, you’ll have truly earned that beer.
