Laser Hair Removal for Men and Other Options

Shirt-off season is in full swing, and nothing ruins a day at the beach like back hair so thick you could pass as a Dothraki pack animal. Maybe you're the guy who doesn't take his shirt off, even after you've made it into the water, or perhaps you're the guy who steers clear of tank tops to avoid the embarrassing reality of shoulder hair — wherever you fall on the spectrum, chances are you have removed some unsightly, weird whiskers on repeat in the past.

However, before you reach for the familiar razor — and all of the nicks and cactus stubble that can come with it — why not look into something that might last a little longer and leave you feeling a little smoother. Whatever method you might think you want to try,  we're about to help make your decision a little easier. Keep reading as we break down the best options for permanent hair removal, from waxing to laser hair removal.

Hair Removal Cream

Pros: Pain-free and quick, depilatory creams such as Nair, Nad’s and Veet are one of the most popular methods of at-home hair removal. These creams use calcium hydroxide — a compound that helps boost the action of thioglycolates in dissolving hairs at their roots — to weaken the hair follicles, allowing you to easily wipe the hair from your skin.

Cons: “These creams are tempting because they’re cheap and can be used [for hair removal at home], but because of the harsh chemicals involved, they can irritate sensitive skin,” explains Helene Marie, waxing expert at European Wax Center. “Since the skin on your face is especially delicate, this may not be a good option.”

Cost: $10

Threading

Pros: The thread is held in such a way that it removes a few hairs at once. For small areas such as your eyebrows or face, threading offers precise grooming in a few minutes with minimal pain.

Cons: Threading isn’t a viable option for large areas like chest or back, it’s not a permanent hair removal option and it can be difficult on sensitive skin, particularly if you are an acne sufferer, warns Marie.

Cost: $7 and up

Waxing

Pros: If you need a smooth chest right away, waxing is a great option. Unlike shaving, a wax grows back in a few weeks rather than a few days, itch-free and without stubble. “Your skin becomes softer and smoother, and your hair less coarse and more sparse,” details Marie. “And the wax provides a mechanical exfoliation that leaves the skin soft and refreshed.”

Cons: Well, it doesn’t tickle, nor does it offer a permanent hair removal solution. Also, Marie cautions to steer clear of at-home waxing kits or you could end up with patchy, angry skin: “Never, ever wax your face at home and especially do not let your significant other talk you into letting them do it. It really is best left to a professional.”

Cost: $40 and up

At-Home Hair Removal Devices

Pros: Significantly more affordable than in-office laser hair removal treatments, devices such as the Tria Laser and the no!no! Hair Removal devices are good for small areas, fine hair or post-laser upkeep. “At-home devices are fine as maintenance treatments once you have consulted and been treated professionally,” advises Graceanne Svendsen, senior esthetician and cosmetic laser specialist at the Shafer Plastic Surgery and Laser Center in New York City.

Cons: The majority of reviews on the no!no! Hair Removal device, which runs between $200 and $300 and claims to “crystallize” hair by sending a small shock through the follicle via a thin, coated wire, say that it requires a hefty time commitment to see any significant hair reduction — two to three 30-minute sessions per week for a year — but most say it’s fairly pain-free.

The FDA-approved Tria Laser 4X ($449) for hair removal at home. The device uses the same diode laser technology as professional laser hair removal, which targets and de-activates the hair follicle. Many users reported no further hair growth after two months, but did agree that it was painful, albeit less so than in-office treatments.

Cost: $200-$450

In-Office Laser Treatments

Pros: Permanent hair removal! If you’ve accepted that shoulder hair will never actually be in fashion, and if you have light skin and dark hair, this is the gold standard of de-fuzzing your body for good. Laser hair removal works by delivering mild radiation to the hair follicles with minimal downtime or redness.

Cons: Depending on the density and coarseness, you may need up to 12 treatments for a single area, but the average is six to eight — and make no mistake, it stings. But, says Svendsen, nothing you can’t handle: “Absolutely, positively it shouldn’t be more than a six out of 10 on the pain scale,” she says, and notes that the Candela GentleMAX is your best bet for a low-sting experience.  “If I see toes scrunching, faces squinting or any manner of pain, I adjust my treatment, so don’t be afraid to ask the technician to lower the intensity.”

Cost: $150-$250 per treatment

Electrolysis

Pros: If you have light skin and silver, white or light blonde hair, you may be warned against laser hair removal (the lasers need to detect a stark difference between the hair and the skin), so electrolysis, which zaps the follicle with electricity using an ultra-thin needle, could be your best bet. It’s also less expensive than laser hair removal but promises similar permanent hair removal results.

Cons: Electrolysis is uncomfortable, and you’ll likely need more sessions than you would for laser hair removal, sometimes up to 30. Yes … 30.

Cost: $50 and up per session

So what's the hairy truth? A smooth, fur-free face or body is well within reach this summer, so keep the the Gillette razor for your chin on up, and see how great life can be with two eyebrows and a smooth back with something a little more ... long lasting.
