Americans Spend More Than $1 Billion on Beer for 4th of July, Says Study

While Homer Simpson standing atop a pyramid of kegs to deliver this inspiring speech to his countrymen with a mug of in hand may not seem like an iconic image of the Fourth of July, it may be closer to the mark than you think. As it turns out, according to a WalletHub survey, Americans will be spending $1 billion on beer for the holiday alone, and $1.6 million if wine is also included.

Beyond that, there's an Americans will spend about $6.7 on their patriotic spreads – whether it's burgers and hotdogs straight off the barbecue or cider and a cheeseboard at a fancier affair. While American taste profiles vary greatly, it seems that BBQ and beer are necessities for a good Independence Day celebration.

Also according to the study, the almighty hot dog, an American staple on any day, is expected to enjoy a boom of popularity for this Fourth of July—the 243rd anniversary of the nation's formal embrace of the Declaration of Independence. We’re expecting to chow down as many as 150 million hot dogs during this 24-hour span, meaning that processed meats, white bread, ketchup, relish, and fried onions will likely be flying off the shelves as well.

Further, it seems that Americans are still as patriotic as ever. Fully 86 percent of Americans, when asked, responded that they planned to celebrate the Fourth of July this year in their own fashion.

A significant number, 61 percent, stated that they were thinking of hitting up a picnic, barbecue, or other informal food-centric gathering to celebrate our independence. A sizable minority, or 40 percent, admitted to wanting to see a fireworks display or attend a local community event in order to show some national pride.

So, whether you prefer an ice-cold Budweiser, Coors Banquet, or Yuengling, it looks like for this 4th of July beer might be just what the doctor – or Uncle Sam – ordered. And as the great Homer Simpson said, “mmmm…beer.”
