81% of Men Think James Bond Is a Good Role Model, Says Survey

Bond. James Bond. Those few words can stir up a wide array of emotions for audiences of all ages, calling to mind the immortal Sean Connery, fast cars, femme fatales, gunfights, and fistfights. While some might have called the character’s character (or behavior) into question, according to recent survey results, a lot of guys actually approve (and would like to keep him that way.)

In celebration of the upcoming release of Bond 25, MyLotto24 conducted an in-depth survey on the British spy, and the results just might surprise you. Not only do guys still have a resoundingly positive opinion regarding James Bond, but both men and women seem to share these views of his controversial character.

As it turns out, while feminist critics have often pointed out elements of sexism and misogyny in Ian Fleming's creation, even the most modernized viewers don't seem to have too much of a problem with the British man's man. According to the survey, only 31 percent of men felt that James Bond was a sexist character, and this number only increased by a very modest 3 percent – to 34 percent – when females were surveyed on the same matter.

When asked whether 007 was actually a misogynist, even fewer respondents agreed with that sentiment. In fact, only 23 percent of men felt that this would be an accurate label to attach to the tuxedo-clad killer, and only 26 percent of women agreed with that.

Finally, a whopping 76 percent of men (and 69 percent of women) rejected the notion that the famous fictional secret agent perpetuated “damaging stereotypes about masculinity.”

Overall, 81 percent of men felt that James Bond was a positive role model – meaning that sales of gin, vermouth, vodka, and green olives should be safe for some time to come.

Do fans want to see a female Bond lead? While only a quarter of those questioned said that they preferred to see a female Bond this time around, just over half of respondents said that they were at least receptive to the idea.

As far as having a beautiful Bond girl attached – however temporarily – to the side of Bond, it seems that things are still warm on that front, too. Fully 75 percent of men and 69 percent of women said Bond girls were “bad role models for young women,” and only 38 percent of women (and 28 percent of men) felt that women in Bond flicks were “poorly represented.”

Most of those surveyed seem to be open to the idea of change, but preferred that things stay in line with the longstanding tradition. Gay and transgender versions of James Bond were only mildly popular, with 18 percent of respondents wanting a gay Bond and 13 percent calling for a transgender Bond. While Idris Elba was among the top choice to portray Bond, only 28 percent of those polled wanted to change the race of the iconic 007. (A South Asian bond was less popular, polling at 18 percent support.)
