Natalie Portman Reveals Female Thor Role at Comic-Con

While 'Thor: Ragnarok' was considered, by most, to have been the most successful movie in the thunder god's franchise so far, it looks like series star Natalie Portman might have a little something to say about that.

Slated to heft the legendary hammer Mjolnir in the next Thor movie — and rather controversially cast to serve as Thor herself, in a female twist on the role comic fans are all too familiar with — Portman appeared on stage at this year's San Diego Comic-Con to drop the bombshell news on a very excited audience. “I’ve always had hammer envy,” she said.

With these simple words, Portman might have proven to her legions of fans and the larger fanbase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe that she has what it takes to play Thor. Portman starred alongside Chris Hemsworth in the first two franchise outings, 'Thor' and 'Thor: The Dark World,' but did not appear in 2017's 'Thor: Ragnarok.'

Where will Portman take the character of Jane Foster? Audience speculation is running at an all-time high in the aftermath of the announcement that she might portray a female Thor, and comic book fans are already suggesting that several plot arcs from the pages of their favorite graphic novels might serve as inspiration for the story's cinematic counterpart.

This version of events would see Portman's Jane Foster deemed worthy to swing Thor's iconic hammer after Thor Odinson himself, is found unworthy to do so. A war between the Light Elves and Dark Elves could very well serve as the focus of this fourth outing, if the rumors hold true.

According to Variety, 'Thor: Love and Thunder' isn't the only phase 4 project being launched by Marvel. Fan excitement has reached a fever pitch over news that Thor's mischievous (and totally handsome) brother Loki is set to get his own eponymous film, and lovers of hardcore action movies are extremely amped up over the reveal that 'Blade' would be getting a reboot — one starring 'Green Book' star Mahershala Ali.

Benedict Cumberbatch will also return as Dr. Stephen Strange in 'Dr. Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,' and Scarlett Johannson will star in 'Black Widow.'

Prepare for battle in 2021 as, finally, a female Thor threatens to show the world the power of the goddess of thunder.
