Most Singles Agree Shots Are OK On the First Date

First dates can be scary. Perfectly styled hair, some nice cologne or perfume, and a quick spot check to make sure you don't have any broccoli (or meat) lingering between your teeth – it only makes sense that a lot of us will look to alcohol for some assistance in coping with the stress.

In fact, according to a new report from Plenty of Fish, half of all men and women who go out on a first date decide to hit the booze first. The dating app’s study examined the partnership between first dates and alcoholic beverages.

The study suggests that not only is it a coin flip as to whether or not a person is interested in drinking on the first date, but also that those who do decide to imbibe vary wildly in their overall preferences. Beyond that, the results reveal that you can be sure your date is absolutely judging you for what you decide to toss down the hatch – no pressure or anything!

Singles who decide to drink on the first date most often do so to calm their nerves or to add some liquid courage – and chattiness – to an otherwise sober personality. On the other hand, those who don't drink on the first date dodge the bottle because they'd prefer to get to know their potential partner better without alcohol being involved.

Further, your drink order matters, and makes a lasting impression, at least according to this most recent PoF data. Statistically speaking, men who want to get lucky on a debut outing should consider picking up an ice-cold beer or a chilled cider. As it turns out, 23 percent of women found these two options to be the most attractive alcoholic options for a date to order. Precisely the same percentage of men believed that a margarita was the most attractive drink for a woman.

Also, almost half of men (46 percent) would reach for a sudsy brew or a cold can of cider at a glance anyway, and 26 percent of women surveyed said that the sweet tang of a well-made margarita would be their first choice. For those on a more mature first date (aged 45-plus), wine was the drink of choice.

On a slightly humorous note, a majority of respondents to the Plenty of Fish survey said that they were totally cool with their date downing shots during their first meeting, though women were less enthusiastic about the idea than men.

A more philosophical question was also posed to the Plenty of Fish survey group. When asked which classic cocktail from a list of possibilities best meshed with their own take on dating, answers varied wildly.

A full 28 percent of participants selected the Tequila Sunrise, noted for its exciting nature. Meanwhile, one-quarter of those surveyed opted for the Old Fashioned, speaking to a classic sense of romance.

On the flip side, just over one-fifth of Romeos and Juliets defined their dating style as a Sex on the Beach (carefree and spontaneous), and double the number of women than men described their approach to dating as a Moscow Mule (slow and meticulous).

No matter which cocktails you snatch up in order to get your juices flowing (and to dispel the first date jitters), make sure to take it easy in the long-haul. One dismal statistic which punctuated the survey said that nearly half of all women had refused a second date due to their partner getting too drunk on the first.
