Women Have Sex Dreams as Often as Men, Says Study

Wet and wild dreams are often associated with men, and young men making the transition into adulthood in particular. It turns out, according to sleep researchers from Germany, it isn’t just young guys dreaming about sex.

A recent report published in Psychology & Sexuality suggests that girls dream about sex just as often as boys. And that's not all – those numbers are increasing as the years go by and the stigma surrounding sexuality (particularly of the female variety) diminishes.

In particular, women aged 16 to 30 are now admitting to having erotic or sexual dreams at three times the rate that they did just 50 years ago. It seems that women are no longer ashamed of getting turned on while hitting the hay and are seemingly unafraid to show off their sexuality as it pertains to a regular sleep cycle.

Women in the aforementioned age group said that they had sex dreams about 22 percent of the time, a number which doesn't fall far from the bar set by young men of the same age. As far as the guys go, they reported down and dirty erotic encounters in their dreams about 25 percent of the time.

The difference between the two sexes when it comes to spicy sleepy time is apparently statistically insignificant. The study's authors, from the University of Freiburg, seem to imply that feminism and a modernization of sexual attitudes could be the primary culprit for an increased admission of erotic dreaming, particularly among women.

“The gender difference in the percentage of erotic dreams in men and women aged 16 to 30 in the present study is lower than that found in a 1966 study, which could reflect the evolution induced in modern societies by the feminism movements,” the study authors wrote. “One might speculate that younger women in modern society deal with sexuality more openly than older women of previous generations.”

So, while men might be “dreaming of Jeannie,” particularly older gentlemen, women are almost equally likely to be conjuring visions of Brad Pitt, Jason Momoa, Ryan Reynolds, Bradley Cooper, or the like. The results resoundingly matter, proving that men and women are moving together toward some form of sexual equality – both in terms of their waking life and in their subliminal, deepest desires.

The study engaged with nearly 3,000 respondents spanning a wide range of ages, from 16 to 92, with mildly sexy activities such as flirtatious behavior and kissing qualifying as sexual in nature.
