Arnold Schwarzenegger Tears Down Idea That 'Real Men Eat Meat'

Arnold Schwarzenegger is a living legend and perhaps the most accomplished bodybuilder of all time as well as a box office icon in the action genre as well as an eminently successful politician. His new role involves taking on toxic messages directed at men — most notably the idea that guys are somehow not real men if they don’t down a boatload of meat on the regular.

Appearing in a new documentary titled "The Game Changers" (the narrative of the film hinging around the explosive new trend in the West of skipping meat or cutting it out entirely) the former "Terminator" star spoke out on the reality of the meat business.

“There’s no one that can relate to it better than I do because I’ve lived in that world ... ‘Steak is for men,’ Schwarzenegger said in an exclusive clip of the film for People. “They show these commercials — burgers, George Foreman with the grill and epic sandwich — this is great, great marketing for the meat industry, selling the idea that real men eat meat. But you’ve got to understand, it’s marketing. It’s not based on reality."

Known for his fitness as well as having reduced his meat intake by as much as 80 percent in recent years, his recent comments might seem an about-face for a man who advocated eating a raft of chicken breasts in his Encyclopedia of Modern Bodybuilding. However, it looks like the “Governator” gets today's concerns about the politics of meat production and the growing environmental questions surrounding factory farming.

This isn't the first time this year that Arnie has decided to push against the meat business. Teaming up with director James Cameron in an initiative sponsored by WildAid in 2016, the two men asked their audiences to consider reducing their meat intake by a whopping 50 percent. Cameron made it clear that he was recommitting himself to his environmentalism by taking this standpoint, per The Guardian.

“How can I call myself an environmentalist when I’m contributing to environmental degradation by what I eat?” Cameron said.

Finally, backgrounded by a ruined looking Earth straight out of one of his dystopian flicks in a bit of a promotional moment during the WildAid clip, Arnie reinforced his stance on saving the planet by reducing meat consumption. “Less meat, less heat, more life.”

Probably not as catchy as “I'll be back,” or “Hasta la vista, baby,” but hopefully as memorable.
