'Hobbs & Shaw' Stars Make Fun of Idris Elba for Doing Cats

You may not be the only one laughing about the upcoming film adaptation of “Cats.”

On a recent appearance on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” “Cats” actor Idris Elba revealed his role in the musical was a source of amusement for a couple of co-stars from another of his upcoming releases — “Hobbs & Shaw.”

Elba said fellow actors Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham teased him about the Andrew Lloyd Webber adaptation on the set of the Fast & Furious spin-off, which will be released in cinemas later this week.

CATS

By this stage you’ve likely seen the trailer for “Cats.” And if you’re anything like the majority of the internet, you probably think it’s a bit weird.

Forbes film critic and box office pundit Scott Mendelson said, “The first trailer for #CatsMovie is appropriately terrifying and insane, like a drug-induced nightmare made real. I can't wait!” Crooked critic Louis Virtel said, “I don't know why you're all freaking out over miniature yet huge cats with human celebrity faces and sexy breasts performing a demented dream ballet for kids.” While The Wrap’s Alonso Duralde said, “So the whole point of the new #TheLionKing is to make the #CatsMovie trailer look less shitty?”

Well, it seems cinema hard men Johnson and Statham proved to be their typically canny selves on the set of “Hobbs & Shaw.”

“When I was working on ‘Hobbs & Shaw’ — just after that I went to work on ‘Cats’,” Elba told Colbert. “So I’m working with Dwayne and Jason and as soon as they found out I was working on ‘Cats,’ this was their favorite thing to do as I walked on set.

“We’re doing this big fight scene, I’m walking in looking all bravado and they’re like, ‘Hey Idris, what are you doing next?'” he continued. “And the crew would be like, ‘What are you doing next?’ And I would be like, ‘…‘Cats.’”

DIGITAL FUR TECHNOLOGY

It was at CinemaCon in April that Universal Pictures revealed it had used “digital fur technology to turn the actors in “Cats” into, well, cats.

The film’s director Tom Hooper has experience with musicals, adapting “Les Miserables” into an Oscar winning $440 million cinema hit in 2012. So he may not have been expecting such a negative reaction to this new tech, which added fur to the faces and bodies of actors and singers such as Elba, Judi Dench, Jennifer Hudson and Rebel Wilson.

Wilson, for one, has seen the funny side of the hoopla, telling Cosmopolitan that she “loved the reaction … I think it was a bit polarizing and people will be super curious to see the finished product,” she continued. “What you got in that trailer was just some small samples of it, but it’s going to be such a big movie. And the cast is obviously incredible.”
