Kit Harington Joins Marvel Universe as Black Knight

While Jon Snow may, in fact, have known nothing, it looks like actor Kit Harington knows his way around a bargaining table, and will soon be joining the Marvel Universe.

According to Geek.com, it has been confirmed that the "Game of Thrones" leading man will return to the big screen to play a part in the next phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, landing the role of Dane Whitman (also known as The Black Knight). Perhaps fittingly, Dane is a mortal character blessed with the possession of a sword crafted from meteorite by the legendary wizard Merlin.

It seems that Kit has a thing for swords, at least – and so do his fans.

During Disney's grandiose D23 Expo, Marvel magician Kevin Feige introduced an array of characters. The immortal characters of "The Eternals" were unveiled alongside the actors and actresses who will play them, and while Kit Harington was not among them (after all, The Black Knight is a mortal) several other notable names were present.

Silver screen icons Salma Hayek and Angelina Jolie will take top billing for the 2020 film, playing the characters of Ajak and Thena respectively. The actor responsible for having portrayed Jon Snow's brother, Robb Stark, is also on tap – Richard Madden will be playing the omnipotent Ikaris in "The Eternals." Gemma Chan, Lia McHugh, Brian Tyree Henry, Don Lee and Lauren Ridloff will fill out the roster to ensure the fans are totally satisfied with the end result as Marvel kicks off a brave new direction in their shared, fictional universe.

According to Marvel, "The Eternals" represent a powerful alliance of superhumans who watch over the proceedings of the mortal world from afar – mostly.

“['The Eternals' are] a race of god-like beings locked in a millennium-old conflict with the less evolved Deviants and their originators, the Celestials. Each Eternal has watched civilizations burgeon and die from their domain of Olympia – they are immortals blessed with strange, sometimes monstrous, powers.”

"The Eternals" were created by a man known as one of the most pioneering comics artists of his time, Jack Kirby, and most members are able to easily pass for mere mortals. Despite this, nearly every member of the team possesses at least one super power, whether it's telepathy, flight, or energy blasts. Despite Kirby having passed away in February of 1994, his vision lives on in the form of yet another superhero team dedicated to fighting evil wherever it may lurk.

Where Kit Harington and his Black Knight fit into the picture is, as yet, fairly unclear. "The Eternals" is slated for broad commercial release on November 6, 2020, joining other planned entries in the MCU such as "Thor: Love and Thunder" and "Black Panther 2."
