'Matrix 4' Is Coming With Keanu Reeves Returning as Neo

Follow the white rabbit. These simple yet cryptic instructions prefaced the release of 1999's “The Matrix,” a film which would shatter box-office records and audience expectations. And it turns out, fans can look forward for another sequel.

According to Variety, in a surprise twist which may be even bigger than those in the first three films, it has been announced that a fourth Matrix movie will be made. Even better, stars Keanu Reeves (Neo) and Carrie-Anne Moss (Trinity) are set to reprise their roles. However, it is currently unclear how the character of Morpheus will be handled, and Laurence Fishburne hasn't confirmed anything on his end as of yet, either.

One of the famed Wachowskis responsible for bringing the original trilogy to life will be returning to the director's chair, with Lana Wachowski having been tapped to write the script as well as direct. Warner Bros. Picture Group chair Toby Emmerich announced as much in a recent statement related to the biggest sci-fi news to drop this summer.

“We could not be more excited to be re-entering ‘The Matrix’ with Lana. Lana is a true visionary — a singular and original creative filmmaker — and we are thrilled that she is writing, directing and producing this new chapter in ‘The Matrix’ universe,” Emmerich said.

Science fiction is already a hot topic in cinema with “Ready Player One,” a slew of Marvel Cinematic Universe entries, and a bunch of “Star Wars” flicks recently taking center stage across the world. Beyond that, Keanu Reeves is on his own hot streak, having helmed the very successful John Wick series (most recently appearing in “John Wick 3: Parabellum”) as well as lending his voice to “Toy Story 4” and just being an overall internet sensation.

Not only that, but 2019 marks the 20th anniversary of the first Matrix film, and so the news that the fourth installment of the famous and much-beloved franchise will begin production soon seems almost too good to be true. We need something to fill the void that will inevitably be left from the MCU divorce from Spider-Man and a brand new Matrix movie just might be it.

So, Matrix fans might want to get your trench coats, combat boots, black sunglasses, and hair gel ready. When The One returns to save all of humanity (again), you might want to look the part.
