Leonardo DiCaprio Pledges $5 Million for Amazon Forest Fires

As social media personalities and celebrities such as Lil Nas X, Madonna, and Cara Delevingne line up to support the Amazon, climate change and other environmental issues, Leonardo DiCaprio seems to be out front, acting as a standard-bearer.

According to Variety, in order to aid relief efforts and prevention of further fires, the charity which Leonardo DiCaprio co-chairs, Earth Alliance, has set up the emergency Amazon Forest Fund, and has announced a $5 million donation. While $5 million may not sound like much in the grand scheme of things, a dollar can go a long way when it comes to ensuring that the number of wildfires is reduced and that existing burns are contained. The Earth Alliance is further calling for all people who support them to make contributions as well, pooling their resources in hopes of helping out.

In an Instagram post, the "Once Upon a Time In Hollywood" actor made it clear that the Amazon Forest Fund would be deployed to “focus on critical resources for indigenous communities and other local partners” with the aims of protecting “the life sustaining biodiversity of the Amazon” against the raging blazes. In comments made to Reuters, DiCaprio would lament the “incredibly tragic” situation, going on to lay at least some of the blame on world governments — particularly Jair Bolsonaro's Brazil.

“The governments around the world, including Brazil, need to work together to ensure that this doesn't continue,” he said.

But Leonardo DiCaprio's foray into philanthropy isn't the only news on this front, as the G-7 nations have also pledged to pitch into help save the Amazon. Their promised contribution? A whopping $22 million, a sum apparently even backed by United States President Donald Trump and France's Emmanuel Macron.

Not everyone is pleased with the supposed leadership of the G-7 nations on this issue, though. Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro spoke out on what he seemingly perceived to be a bit of a snub, throwing some diplomatic shade via Twitter. “The French President's suggestion that Amazonian issues be discussed at the G-7 without the participation of the countries of the region evokes a misplaced colonialist mindset in the 21st century.”

Leonardo DiCaprio's call to action (and generous donation, via the sci-fi sounding Earth Alliance) is the obvious first step toward something of a solution for the threatened habitats of the Amazon. One of the last natural and unspoiled wonders of the world, its preservation is vital for those with a sense of environmental stewardship.

A Change.org petition demanding that Brazil take a more proactive stance toward protecting the Amazon has so far accrued over 5 million signatures. The petition was started by Valeria Magalhaes of Manaus, Brazil, and has become something of a social media sensation as the world watches the forests burn.
