Men Are Heading to the Beauty Spa

The boys are back in town, and for once, they aren't headed for the bar. Modern men are headed for the day spa. Beautifiers, cooling cucumber facials, mud baths: you name it — men are indulging in increasing numbers.

This may all seem a little far-fetched in a country where steak and potatoes still reign supreme and where beards are more common to see on a 20-something, 30-something or 40-something man than a bare face, but according to the International Spa Association (ISPA), it's dead true.

Board chairman of the association, Garrett Mersberger, told AP News “We’re seeing a lot more men going to spas. It used to always be a female-driven thing. We’re now seeing 50-50, if not swinging more toward the males.”

And it's apparently not all about the basics, either. Guys heading to these places of rest, relaxation and beauty are all about the all-inclusive.

“They’re much more aware that it’s not just a thing I go to get pampered. It’s an actual lifestyle choice with benefits to my body, to my wellness,” Mersberger said. “It’s part of my routine now. It’s not just about going for relaxation.”

We can all probably agree that taking a holistic approach toward your appearance is always a good thing, but it's even more encouraging to see men taking care of themselves writ large. Besides that, these guys are also breaking down systemic and somewhat sexist barriers when it comes to who is “allowed” to patronize a spa.

ISPA president Lynne McNees was quick to point out that men are even joining group sessions in order to take advantage of what used to be a girls' day (or night) out. “Spas are really having to evolve to accommodate that male spa goer,” she said. “Typically, your back of house for males would be smaller because historically it’s been very heavy female. Now they’re having to shift that ... We’re seeing a lot of groups and parties and different special events in the spa with both men and women.”

So, it seems that 2019 teases a future where everyone can rest side by side at the spa as they allow tender hands to exfoliate their much-abused rough and rugged skin.

And, according to some, it’s about damn time.
