The Best Hikes Around the World to Add to Your Bucket List

There’s something spectacular about getting away from your day-to-day and immersing yourself in nature while getting in a good sweat. Hiking your way through the world is an unparalleled way to take in the sights and sounds – and then have a great excuse to eat as much as you want while you continue traveling, of course.

When it comes to jaw-dropping hiking spots across the globe, the options are endless and frankly hard to narrow down the right option for your needs and wants. Here, we’ve put together a snackable list to help you plan your next bucket list hike, from California to Croatia.

Kjeragbolten, NorwayGettyImages

You’ve probably seen the iconic photo spot on Instagram – you know the one – the boulder, seemingly magically wedged between two peaks on the Kjerag mountain. It turns out, getting to the mid-mountain boulder in Southern Norway is an exceptional hike; we’re taking about six to eight hours depending, of course, on your speed and fitness level.

The total distance of the hike is about seven miles with just under 2,000 feet of climbing. Although it’s considered to be steep, the popular destination is peppered with fellow visitors and no climbing skills are required. Just be sure to bring plenty of water – and a camera for the Kjeragbolten boulder photo opp.

Plitvice Lakes National Park, CroatiaGettyImages

Possibly one of the most visually striking national parks, Plitvice offers everything a seasoned (or newbie) hiker could want: optional steep inclines, plenty of shade, and jaw-dropping views.

The UNESCO World Heritage Site can get busy during the summer and fall months, but with over eight different routes, the crowds usually disperse quickly, which allows for a quieter trek through its natural splendour. The routes range between two miles to eleven miles, most of which will lead you to the park’s shining gem: picturesque Veliki Slap (big waterfall). You can also opt for a more leisurely route, which includes a boat ride across the Kozjak lake.

Appalachian Trail, USAGettyImages

The Appalachian Trail is the longest hiking-only footpath in the world, spanning 2,192 miles across fourteen states. Because of its sheer size, there are handfuls of hiking options that range from easy going day trips to rigorous multi-day experiences.

While the trail is open year round, The Appalachian Trail Conservatory suggests embarking on the hike in late spring and early fall, in the morning before it gets too hot. Popular day-hikes include up and back to the top of a mountain where there is a view, or a simple loop that passes through the forest. Completing the entire 2,190 miles is doable, but a typical thru-hike takes 5 to 7 months and must be rigorously planned for.

The Great Wall of ChinaGettyImages

Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or you prefer taking strolls, visiting The Great Wall of China is a must-do when traveling through Beijing. The historical landmark boasts uneven steps and slopes, elevation and of course, insane views of the surrounding area.

We suggest getting off the main trail and taking on the Jinshanling, Jiankou, and Simatai trails, which are much less crowded than the better known Badaling section. Trails range between three to five hours and make for an unforgettable day trip from Beijing.

Yosemite National Park, USAGettyImages

Yosemite National Park has become one of the most visited parks in the United States, and for good reason. The beauty of the California fauna and flora shine, from the 594-foot Nevada Fall to the Cathedral Lake. Yosemite has over 750 miles of trails to explore and because of its popularity, you’ll need to get a permit if you want to go for a hike – no matter how intermediate.

We suggest heading to the Mirror Lake trail if you’re looking for an easy hike with great views, but if you’re looking for something a little more strenuous, head to North Dome, which takes you across Half Dome, which offers some of the best views in the entire park and even includes a campsite for multi-day hikes.

Inca Trail, Machu Picchu, PeruGettyImages

One of the most popular things to do in South America, hiking the Inca Trail is not for the faint of heart. The hike will bring you along ancient narrow paths, from the Perivian countryside into the mountains, and finally to Machu Picchu.

It takes most travelers four days to complete the 25-mile trail from start to finish, most of which is considerably steep and at a high altitude. Along with a strenuous workout, expect unbelievable mountain views and handfuls of centuries-old Peruvian ruins. Also note that this adventure will require a permit.

Grand Canyon, USAGettyImages

The Grand Canyon is a popular destination for day hikes, largely due to the fact that you do not need a permit to hike into the canyon. While a day hike is possible, over 250 people are rescued from the canyon each year due to taking on too much. Remember that while the start of the hike is on an incline, going back up is going to be much more difficult.

If you want an easy hike, stick to the Rim Trail, which has great views of the inner canyon and is mostly paved. For a challenging hike, opt for the Grandview Trails, which are largely unmaintained and much steeper than most trails.

Piedras Blancas National Park, Costa RicaGettyImages

Piedras Blancas National Park, which is located in the Golfo Dulce region of Costa Rica, is one of the most biodiverse regions in the country. The National Park acts as an animal refuge for everything from wild boars and cougars to monkeys and sloths. If you want to catch a glimpse of tropical wildlife, this is the hike for you.

There are a handful of trails accessible from the surrounding eco-lodges and through the park itself. We suggest heading out during the morning (the rainforest gets dark, quick), wearing rubber boots, and bringing lots of water – the humidity and heat can take you by surprise. Note that the rugged trails are largely unpaved and unmaintained. It’s best to hire two capable guides who know the area and can act fast if you encounter any unsuspecting wildlife.
