Why You May Want to Consider Using CBD After a Workout

Sure, CBD has a reputation of being used for woo-woo practices, a well-loved beauty and skincare ingredient, and well, just puffing by the pool, but using CBD can have amazing benefits both during and after a workout. This is largely due to the anti-inflammatory properties (which help with recovery), as well as the focus and calmness that comes along with using CBD.

Here, we’ve spoken to handfuls of sports experts to get to the bottom of why you should potentially weave CBD into your fitness routine.

Eases Post-Workout Nausea

Although CBD does not offer the array of benefits associated with using full-plant medicine, CBD provides significant therapeutic relief post-workout without the psychoactive effects of THC. CBD is plant-derived and is a safer alternative to the prolonged use of other medicines like Aspirin or Ibuprofen for recovery.

“Not only does CBD help to reduce inflammation, it is an antiemetic and analgesic, which means it can ease post-workout nausea and pain. It may also act as a sleep aid, and sleep is critical to recovery,” says Tamara Lilien of CannaLily. “Do your research and only purchase your CBD from a reputable source. Always remember, CBD may interact with other medications you are taking. Consult with your doctor before beginning a post-workout CBD regimen.”

Promotes Homeostasis in the Body

“If you are a person who trains in the evening, taking CBD products after your workout can help your mind calm down so that you can get an adequate sleep, especially if you drink caffeine before training. Exercising in the evening is not a bad idea at all, but it can promote alertness and make falling asleep difficult. CBD products can help with this issue,” says Adam Kemp, professional basketball player and fitness blogger.

“Contrarily, if you train in the morning and have trouble staying awake through your workday, taking CBD products after your workout can help provide a natural alertness that caffeine or food alone won’t provide,” he adds.

Supports the Internal Endocannabinoid System

“Taking CBD is all about balancing your body by supporting your internal endocannabinoid system,” says Michael Coleman, VP of Sales and Marketing for Medical Marijuana, Inc. This often untalked about system is responsible for many important natural functions like metabolism, immune response, appetite, coordination, appetite, and more. “Workouts disrupt the body's natural processes, so maintaining this balance with daily CBD – and particularly post-workout CBD – may help athletes restore their natural balance more efficiently, and be ready for their next workout faster. Some athletes are even putting the lid on their OTC pain relievers in favor of CBD because of its positive effect on the pain and inflammation common after strenuous physical activity,” he says.

“If people aren't sure about introducing CBD into their routine, topical CBD creams and salves can be a great place to start,” Coleman adds. “They can quickly ease sore joints and muscles after a tough workout. With topicals, CBD doesn't go into the bloodstream, so the effects are spread across the entire body. Instead, athletes can achieve more targeted relief for troubled areas.”

Promotes Greater Endurance

When muscles rub against each other during any workout, a condition known as DOMS, or delayed onset muscle soreness, is triggered. As the slow and often microscopic tearing of muscle fiber continues, the swelling begins. “This is where the CBD used both before and after a workout allows for the consumer to gain the maximum amount of endurance as well as the benefits of relief after the session is over,” says Mike Robinson, founder, Global Cannabinoid Research Center. “Inflammation is experienced when muscles are damaged. When muscles are damaged, it becomes difficult to heal until inflammation is eased – and that’s where CBD becomes one of the best post-workout supplements I know of as a cannabinoid medicine researcher.”

Helps Burn Fat More Effectively

Although CBD is most commonly associated with fighting pain and inflammation, the cannabinoid also plays an important role in fitness. In fact, research indicates that CBD can prevent the solidification of fats by stimulating several proteins. Likewise, cannabinoids promote the burning of calories on the cellular level while simultaneously reducing the development of new fat cells.

“Cannabis' effect on cellular health is primarily due to the high concentration of cannabinoid receptors found in the body, particularly among hubs of metabolic functioning,” says Sam Morrison, Cannabis Researcher and Health expert for Glacier Wellness. “Furthermore, because CBD is an effective anti-inflammatory and vasodilator, it promotes healthy blood flow and relaxes the soft tissue effectively, improving vascularization and targeting stubborn fat.”

“CBD oil will also help you lose weight by regulating your blood sugar levels, which will allow your pancreas to produce less fat-storing hormones,” adds Jamie Hickey, a personal trainer/nutritionist at Truism Fitness. “This will equate to your body burning more fat for energy and diminish the amount of fat cells overall.”

“Another way CBD oil helps you lose weight is by controlling your anxiety and stress, making you feel calmer, which will lower cortisol levels in your body and reduce how much fat you store,” Hickey adds. “People with anxiety or stress disorders produce up to 2x the amount of cortisol than the average person; CBD oil will regulate your cortisol levels so that they peak and lower when they are supposed to.”
