How Brad Pitt Benefitted From an All-Male AA Group

Brad Pitt is perhaps most famous for being one of the hunkiest men alive, synonymous with “sex symbol” for decades. Even now, at 55 years old, the "Troy" and "Mr. & Mrs. Smith" star is still turning heads wherever he goes — but a lot of times for other reasons, such as his divorce and battle with alcohol.

Now, after attending an all-male Alcoholics Anonymous group for a year and a half, Pitt is ready to buckle down and get honest about why he needed help, and how the guys in the therapy circle helped him to deal with his personal demons.

Speaking to The New York Times, Pitt discussed not just his upcoming role in Ad Astra, but he also made it clear that having religiously attending AA had been a positive force for change in his life.

“You had all these men sitting around being open and honest in a way I have never heard,” Pitt said. “It was this safe space where there was little judgment, and therefore little judgment of yourself.”

While statistics as to how effective attending AA meets (and observing AA asks) are varied across the board, depending on who you ask, there can be little doubt that the first step in successfully coping with a serious addiction is an admission that there is, in fact, a problem.

So, what was the final straw for Pitt? A spat over the subject of his drinking habit between he and ex-wife Angelina Jolie during a flight, an exchange which Pitt called “the last straw” between the two. "I had taken things as far as I could take it, so I removed my drinking privileges," he said.

As far as the actor is concerned, trust and a lack of harsh judgment were the primary factors which he credited to the circle of coping men. Instead of revealing his dark secrets to the world, the other guys in the AA group kept Pitt's problems among themselves, never selling or sharing his story to the press despite what must have been some serious pressure.

And since all of those assembled were grappling with the same monster in a bottle, there was a sense of liberation and fraternity — at least according to Pitt.

“It was actually really freeing just to expose the ugly sides of yourself,” the "Interview with the Vampire" star remarked during the, well, real-world interview,” Pitt said. “There’s great value in that.”

While he maintains a pretty low profile, preferring personal interactions over social media likes and retweets, he still maintains a dedicated fanbase. Those who fell in love with him on the red carpet during the 1990s — and those People Magazine panelists who voted him Sexiest Man Alive not once, but twice — all seem to wish him well in his journey of self-improvement.
