Google Maps Launches Tools to Help With Drug and Alcohol Addiction

When people use Google Maps, it’s usually to figure out which streets to avoid due to traffic and which restaurants to grab a bite at in the local neighborhood. However, there are now two new tools that can help those in drug and alcohol recovery find the resources they need. The addition of these brand new Google Maps tools come right on time for September’s National Recovery Month.

According to the Google Blog, the first new tool is known as the Recovery Locator which uses data to provide users with the ability to see any and all nearby addiction support meetings. Local Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, SmartRecovery and Al-Anon meetings will be displayed on the map, with all pertinent details provided. The entire process takes only a matter of seconds, as well, meaning that the urge to seek help can be immediately satisfied by this latest introduction by Alphabet.

The second addition to the Google Maps app is the Naloxone Locator Tool. This feature allows those battling opioid addiction — or their friends, family and other loved ones — to see a list of nearby locations which dispense Naloxone (an opioid overdose-reversal drug) without a prescription. Those wanting to find a local pharmacy dispensing the drug can simply search “Narcan near me,” or “Naloxone near me” for best results.

Naloxone is responsible for saving countless lives from a horrible fate incurred by opioid overdose — a topic in the news increasingly of late due to Purdue Pharma’s multiple lawsuits and subsequent bankruptcy filing — and it is recommended that any addicts, or those close to them, keep doses of the drug readily at hand. While larger chains such as Walgreens, CVS, Rite-Aid and others are currently the only ones on the list, Google has stated their intention to include local, independently owned pharmacies to the app as well.

In tandem with the launch of their Recover Together site, Google's newest initiative comes at a time when the nation is gripped by a drug abuse epidemic. Google claims that over 21 million Americans are currently battling the disease that is addiction, and that over 130 U.S. citizens die each day as a result.
