All work and no play makes someone a dull boy, but does a lack of sleep also lead to a dull sex life? A new study suggests that not getting enough zzz's can lead to low testosterone, low libido and ED.

A report appearing the Journal of Sexual Medicine indicates that if you want to hit the sheets with a sex partner, you'd better stock up on a decent amount of shut-eye beforehand.

While the study participants were already in their sixties, something which may disqualify them from consideration by many of today's youth, it's a myth that seniors do not enjoy vibrant sex lives. Despite being hampered, at times, by certain common afflictions which can take a bit out of libido such as sleep apnea, COPD, high blood pressure, diabetes and other conditions killing the mood sometimes, these study subjects proved once again that lack of sleep leads to low testosterone.

And, in turn, low testosterone leads to a very low libido — and for men, erectile dysfunction. Beyond that (and beyond the stereotype associated with low testosterone), women also have a need for testosterone.

The culprit? A lack of REM sleep. A healthy REM sleep cycle can last anywhere from ten minutes to an hour, in increasing lengths based on the total period of sleep. During REM sleep, testosterone is circulating like crazy throughout your system.

With low testosterone already being a big talking point when it comes to men's sexual health, it's little wonder that a lack of sleep may be to blame. According to the CDC, about one-third of American adults are working on too little rest, and tiredness leads to poor performance at work as well as when it comes time to perform one's romantic duties.

Some tips for getting a better night’s rest include avoiding caffeine and nicotine before bed and leaving the electronics off. That means no late night Fortnite or Overwatch sessions if you want to actually do the nasty. Avoiding alcohol before bed is also key, no matter how much power one invests in the traditional nightcap. 

It turns out, the secret to a better sex life, might actually be just getting more sleep.
