Men Will Do Almost Anything to Avoid Doctor, Says Study

No one really likes going to the doctor. After all, the off office isn't a very fun place and there’s usually that slight smell of antiseptic or rubbing alcohol, and a waiting room filled with pissed-off people who have already been waiting an hour beyond their scheduled appointment. Worse than that, something is wrong with you — and you’ve Googled the symptoms. It turns out though, that men probably hate it more than everyone else.

A study from the Cleveland Clinic is backing up this long-held with hard data, reinforcing the notion that guys simply hate going to see their GP.

Surveying nearly 1,200 American adult males, researchers with the Cleveland Clinic determined that 72 percent of men — nearly three-quarters! — would rather sweat their ass off mowing the lawn or cleaning the long-neglected toilet than visit the doctor's office. An even more substantial slice of the survey group, 77 percent, would rather go shopping as opposed to seeing their doc.

It doesn't stop there, though. Remember when we talked about consulting Dr. Google? Nearly two-thirds of men do so before even considering setting foot in a physician's office. This can certainly be helpful in some cases, but it can also lead to further (often unfounded) fears as well as a bit of what has been coined “cyberchondria.”

Dr. Eric Klein of the clinic elaborated on the results, speaking to the anxiety and bullishness with which men handle their personal health concerns. “Men tend to be stubborn about a lot of things, with taking care of their health usually near the top of the list,” Klein said. Our hope with this campaign is that by shedding a little light on what barriers are keeping men from engaging in preventative care, we can then work to motivate them to take their health more seriously.”

One of the biggest issues with this hard-headed approach by the most manly of men is that they frequently lie or mislead the doctor when they do eventually show up. A full 20 percent of men admitted to not being perfectly honest or truthful with their primary care practitioner, with reasons ranging from fear of facing the diagnosis to simple, raw embarrassment.

Avoiding the doctor's office can have somewhat serious results if nagging symptoms drag on unchecked, and with the data suggesting that just half of all men are undergoing an annual physical exam, the situation grows even harrier in terms of the big picture.

For men it might be time to pack up your pretenses and go see the doctor if you're feeling truly ill. Even if you're not, and you're advancing in years, an annual physical never hurt anyone. Well, it might hurt your feelings, but your family and loved ones will certainly thank you for taking care of yourself a little bit better.
