Porsche Unveils the Taycan Its First Electric Car

Making a major step forward in the emerging electric car marketplace, legacy luxury brand Porsche has unveiled its first electric car—the super-flashy Taycan. With crazy curves, sleek German engineering, and a low profile that barely leaves room to slide a piece of paper beneath, the Porsche Taycan promises big-spending buyers the luxury Porsche fans expect in an electric version.

The first question on everyone's mind is, of course, speed. Exactly how fast is the new Taycan (apparently pronounced tie-con)?

The answer is: lightning quick. The base model of the vehicle—the Taycan Turbo—will do zero to 60 in 3 seconds flat, according to the manufacturer. The upgraded version— the Taycan Turbo S—can achieve this speed in 2.6 seconds. Top speed for both models? A brisk as hell 161 mph.

Perhaps one of the most impressive features of the new Porsche Taycon model is the fact that it features all-wheel drive, something of a rarity on a low-profile sportster. Porsche claims that this transmission will improve range and performance, but without testing numbers from the EPA, the former claim can't quite be evaluated just yet.

According to Car and Driver, touch panel displays, adaptive air suspension, and a range of proprietary “smart” suspension and engine technologies blend together in a vision of what top-end cars of the future might achieve.

However, a major concern for those with deep pockets who are considering a luxury electric car is the question of exactly how long it will take to charge a depleted battery. The good news is that the 800-volt DC fast-charging system can charge a fully spent battery back up to 80% within less than half an hour—22.5 minutes to be more precise. All you have to do is bring the whip home, hook it up to the juice in your garage, and maybe catch half an episode on Netflix, and you're good to hit the road again.

There's just one problem. If you or your local fueling and charging stations don't have 800-volt service but rather 240-volt service, you might have to wait a while longer.

At the end of the day, price point matters. A lot. These vehicles won't be cheap, and despite base price tags of around $153,000 for the Taycan Turbo and $187,000 for the Turbo S, Porsche is already reporting over 30,000 pre-orders.

That being said, the carmaker promises that, in addition to these two models, they'll also release a lineup of less expensive alternatives, so we can all get in on the fun.

The 2020 Porsche Taycan Turbo and Taycan Turbo S are slated to launch later this year, with three showcase events scheduled for early September.
