What does your favorite bar look like? Is it nestled comfortably into a strip mall? High above the city in a hotel? Maybe it’s even below your buddy’s pad on a block of apartments. Bars come in all shapes and sizes, but their housing situation is usually quite predictable. That’s why we’re particularly infatuated with bars and restaurants that used to be something else. Not a speakeasy or a terrasse, these bars have been completely remodeled to house taps and bar rails – and some of them had to get pretty darn creative to make it work.

Tucked into the Liberty Hotel in Boston (which used to be a city prison), Alibi is situated right where the jailhouse’s drunk tank used to be. Extremely fitting? Yes. A little spooky? Uh-huh. Expect a particularly lively nightlife that extends into the late hours of the night, elevated versions of your favorite bar rail drinks, and a cozy terrasse, conducive to dancing.

Santa’s Pub, Nashville, Tennessee

If you find yourself in Nashville, don’t skip a night at Santa’s Pub. The full Nashville experience, Santa’s is set in a double-wide trailer and boasts year round Christmas lights and endearingly tacky holiday decor, a resident Santa Claus, and stupid cheap beer. Oh, and be sure to hop on stage for karaoke.

This high-end retro restaurant and bar is set in a refurbished Greyhound bus station (thus the name). While it could easily be kitschy or overly themed, The Grey is a funky, tasteful bar first, former bus depot second – and while there are elements that pay homage to the property’s past… well, your focus will be on the beer selection and seasonal food menu.

Think airplane food is all bad? Think again! The Airplane Restaurant in Colorado Springs is housed in a former Boeing KC-97 tanker. You’ll find this seasonal bar and grill floating on the East River in Brooklyn. Expect super casual picnic tables, new American fare, and an absolutely insane view of the Manhattan skyline. This charming eatery in New York is tucked into a converted Wall Street bank vault with original vault doors dating all the way back to 1904.
