John Wick Spinoff Ballerina Focuses on Female Assassin

Audiences across the world gasped in shock as they realized that Daisy, John Wick's beloved dog, was killed by Tarasov during a home invasion. When Wick began to cut a trail of bloody vengeance in Daisy's name, a silver screen legend was born. Now, it seems, a new assassin is in Wick’s future.

After three successful outings as the character, it looks like Keanu Reeves is prepared to take a backseat for a fourth installation of the franchise. According to Deadline, a spinoff series featuring a female assassin is set for production, with Reeves executive producing and Len Wiseman (“Underworld,” “Live Free or Die Hard,” “Total Recall”) directing.

Tentatively titled “Ballerina” (likely because rumors suggest that the lead heroine will come from The Director's ballet class, as seen in “John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum”) the film promises to be everything you already love about John Wick films. High-speed chases, intense gunplay, and well-choreographed martial arts are a staple of the franchise, and “Ballerina” will probably feature as much (or more).

So far, it's fairly unclear who will be cast as the main character in “Ballerina”, although Unity Phelan is a name that keeps cropping up in this regard due to her credits as such in the third John Wick film. As of yet though, there aren’t many details, so fans could find themselves surprised by any eventual announcement of the role.

If that wasn't enough good news for John Wick fans, it's also rumored that a TV show based in the same universe is in production. This show will focus its attention on a place rather than a particular person, from early reports, taking place at the chic-yet-dangerous Continental Hotel. Boasting their own rigid rules, security, and an unmistakably cool atmosphere, it’s no surprise that this new show would feature the hotel as the backdrop for their series. In fact, the iconic gold coins used as currency among the league of contract killers taking up residence in The Continental have been so legendary that real-life equivalents struck from silver and gold have become collector's items.

Fans of Keanu Reeves and his character shouldn't feel altogether heartbroken, that he won’t appear in “Ballerina”. As it turns out, the team at Lionsgate is already hard at work producing “John Wick 4” and is expected to hit theaters on May 21, 2021. “Ballerina” is set to follow “John Wick 4”.
