Dwayne The Rock Johnson Returns to WWE in Fox's SmackDown Premiere

If you’ve missed Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson’s days of wrestling, we’ve got some good news for you. According to Twitter, he’s making a return to WWE's SmackDown Live premiere on Fox on October 4.

Given that Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson's tweet on the matter has already racked up more than 66,000 likes, it seems pretty clear that his appearance in WWE Smackdown will be a success.

Or it could have been the promise of free booze. The Roc’ claims that the tequila is on him after the event. Whether or not ‘The People's Champion’ fulfills his promise, fans on social media seem to be excited over this news. Memes, animated GIFs and comments of total disbelief and excitement spilled out into various tweets, and for good reason.

Of course, the former WWE champion's pump-up post hyping his appearance is accompanied by his signature Titantron entrance video for extra effect.

Despite all of this, though, it's quite unclear whether or not The Rock will be hitting the ring for some serious action. Appearing on Live with Kelly and Ryan in August, Johnson claimed that he had quietly retired from in-ring action.

“I miss wrestling, I love wrestling,” Johnson said. “Yes, I do... I quietly retired from wrestling because I was lucky enough to have just a really wonderful career and accomplish what I wanted to accomplish, but there’s nothing like a live crowd, a live audience, a live microphone as you both know.”

The Rock can say what The Rock wants, but in the pro wrestling biz, a retirement means next to nothing — quiet or otherwise. The Heartbreak Kid, Shawn Michaels, recently came out of retirement for a match at Crown Jewel. Goldberg famously exited retirement to defeat — and later lose to — Brock Lesnar, ultimately leaving the ring after a brutal match against The Undertaker at WWE Super ShowDown in Saudi Arabia earlier this year.

Retirement doesn’t always mean retirement in the realm of sports entertainment, and some rumors are suggesting that The Rock may, in fact, get his hands a little bit dirty on Friday night.

Nowadays, Johnson is certainly more famous for his silver screen work than for his wrestling, having become a mainstay in the “Fast and Furious” franchise as well as in the ironic realm of family-friendly films. His most recent blockbuster, “Hobbs & Shaw”, has so far grossed $761 million worldwide. And he was named Forbes highest-paid actor for 2019.

Still, wrestling fans the world over probably shouldn’t miss this spectacular debut for more than one reason. Aside from The Rock's appearance, there’s also a title match planned. Brock Lesnar will challenge Kofi Kingston for the WWE championship in a somewhat lopsided pairing, with most observers expecting The Beast to take back the championship.
