1. Create A Checklist

I got this tip from my favorite book, Essentialism. In it, Greg McKeown laid out the very scenario I used above – the late packer.

He advised that you should begin several weeks in advance, starting with a checklist of everything you want to take along. It's also important to divide everything into essential and nonessential items.

Everything you absolutely DO NOT need is a luxury, plain and simple. Need an example? Easy – you need one pair of shoes to wear, but two are unnecessary. Even if you've intelligently included a pair of browns and blacks, it's not something you need.

Only when you have extra space should you start to consider peppering in the luxuries.

2. Wear Your Bulkiest Items To The Airport

This is self-explanatory. If you got hefty garments you want to take with you, then just wear them on the plane!

What falls into this category? Thick sweaters, heavy jackets, boots – all of these can be worn together. There's no need to have them take up valuable luggage space!

3. Get Informed: Carry On Vs. Personal Bags

You'll be able to take one carry on and ONE personal bag on most flights. Let's do a quick rundown of the two:

  • Carry on: Bags that can fit in the overhead bins of the aircraft.
  • Personal Bags: Items like backpacks and laptop cases that can be held on your lap or under the seat in front of you.

Airlines like Delta and Southwest have straightforward regulations when it comes to baggage. If it fits under the seat, they'll simply count it as a personal item. Some others like United and American Airlines have more specific restrictions on bag size.

If your personal bag has pockets, then use them to store portable charges, charging cables, pens, and books. Don't let any space go to waste.

4. Get Creative

Creativity stems from using all the available space as best as you can. This extends well beyond the bags themselves.

Be creative – you won't be back home for a while, so it needs to count!

Wearing a coat? Use the pockets. Stuff them with jewelry and accessories. Hell, wear MULTIPLE watches if you're serious about bringing your A-game on the trip.

5. Be An Efficient Packer

When it comes to packing tips for men, efficiency and planning is the name of the game.

Tightly roll thin garments such as t-shirts and stow them in smaller bags. It's a great way to open up space for heftier items. Rolling them also lessens the probability of creasing!

Efficiently using space is arguably the most important packing rule.

Fill the empty space between the rolls with the bigger garments that you can't roll; sweaters, jackets, and jeans are examples.

6. Harness The Interchangeable Wardrobe

Gents, I've talked about this COUNTLESS times. Prioritize the foundation pieces above everything else – the white and light blue dress shirts, the navy sports jacket, the grey suit.

Bold colors and patterns are great, but impractical when it comes to packing smart.

7. Better Small Than Sorry

Most airlines have specific restrictions when it comes to luggage size. Research ahead of time and make sure your bags fall within the assigned limits.

There are some strict airlines out there! A 2019 article from Sky Scanner determined that Aer Lingus has the crown for the most stringent regulations on bag dimensions (21 inches x 15 inches x 9.4 inches).

Don't get caught with a bag that's too big. You'll miss your plane.

Go as lightweight as possible – the lighter it is, the more you can take with you. Look for bags with specialty pouches that allow for even more storage space.

Bonus Tips

I totally lied – I love you guys too much to leave with just seven tips! There's more to it.

8. Avoid Too Many Luggage Pouches

“Antonio, you just told me to use more pockets – what the heck!?”

Even empty pockets take up space. Choose your bags wisely.

I know, I know, but hear me out. The key to this is a balance. At the end of the day, pouches take up space – even if they're empty.

The MAHI Holdall bag is a bag that strikes the balance I need. It comes several compartments to hold, well, everything! Even a place to store your shoes at the bottom of the bag. Nifty, right?

The best part though? It's not cumbersome and it has just enough pockets to hold all your important things, and then some!

9. Fold Like A Pro

If you're looking to save space in smaller bags, layering should be your go-to method.

Many men before you have struggled to fold suit jackets. Here's just one way I found works best!

Don't worry, it's not complicated: place your garments over each other and make sure each layer is flat. Following that, fold all of them over each other one-by-one.

It's that simple.

10. Force Yourself To Save Space

This is why the guy who invented packing cubes deserves a promotion AND a raise.

What are packing cubes? You guessed it – cubes that function as smaller bags. The idea is that they force you to stick to the essentials and making your bags all the more organized.

Packing cubes are an exceptional tool to stay organized while traveling.

Cubes are especially useful for keeping clothing clean since they stay segregated from other items like toiletries. The fact that they come in various colors means you can color code everything! It's the meticulous man's dream come true.
