The Most Outrageous Turkey Trots in the U.S.

For most, Thanksgiving is a holiday all about overeating and overindulgence. However, there is a growing legion of celebrants who take to the streets in the early hours of the final November Thursday, to preemptively burn off the calories of their holiday gluttony. These Thanksgiving morning races have become known as “Turkey Trots,” and are usually no longer than three to four miles in length.

This active prelude to the pie is becoming more popular every year – more than one million runners are estimated to participate in +1,000 races across the country. As their popularity grows, so too does their kitschiness. Runners bundle up to brave the November cold and don colorful turkey costumes, pilgrim clothing and other outlandish outfits — don’t be surprised if a green bean and sweet potato sprint past you on mile two.

The best part of Turkey Trots — yes, better than the couple hundred calories that you’ll burn — is that most of these races contain a philanthropic element, whether that’s a canned food drive or donating proceeds to local charities. After all, this holiday is about being thankful and giving back to the community.

Whether you’re staying home or visiting relatives on the opposite coast this Thanksgiving, there’s sure to be a Turkey Trot taking place in your vicinity. To save you time, we did a little digging to find the best Turkey Trots taking place across the country.

This Turkey Trot is expected to welcome 8,000 runners to Lincoln Park on Thanksgiving morning – a day guaranteed to be chilly in Chi-Town. In addition to the festive ‘fits, this race also supports the Chicago Food Depository with monetary and non-perishable donations — last year, the race raised more than $15,000 and 8,000 pounds of food to feed fellow Chicagoans in need.

The race cruises through the iconic Lake Front Trail, with scenic views of Lake Michigan — make sure to dress warmly for the famous Chicago gusts — and culminates with a rowdy Turkey Day Tailgate, complete with festive games like turkey bowling and well-deserved brews. Trotters can join up as “flocks” and compete to win in the largest flock contest — matching sweet potato hats are suggested, not mandatory.

Plymouth, Massachusetts

What better way to celebrate Thanksgiving than dressing up like a pilgrim in the purported landing site of the Mayflower? Plymouth’s Running of the Pilgrims circles around the waterfront, passing by the scenic harbor and the famous Plymouth Rock, which is incredibly underwhelming yet seasonally appropriate. All trotters are asked to bring an unwrapped gift for the toy drive, which will be donated to the Wonderfund of Massachusetts. We suggest a cuddly stuffed animal turkey.

On November 28, Denver denizens will jog through a four-mile course in the city’s Washington Park, full of flower gardens and winding trails, for the 46th year of the mile-high city’s Turkey Trot. More than 10,000 people join in on this tradition, and proceeds go towards providing health, education and financial stability through Denver’s United Way.

You can expect to see several Denver residents cheering runners on from the sidelines, including volunteers in full turkey get-ups. If you’re visiting, make sure to give yourself a day or two to adjust to the altitude beforehand – running a four-mile race at 5,280 feet will surely prove to be challenging, but will make the mashed potatoes all the more rewarding.

Dutchess County, New York

Turkey Trots in this list range from urban courses to rural rides — the latter can be found in the Rhinebeck Ferncliff Forest 5K Turkey Trot in Dutchess County, NY. Kicking off bright and early on Thanksgiving morning, the 3.1-mile course leads runners out and back through Ferncliff Forest, a gorgeous swath of colorful trees and pristine meadows in New York’s Hudson Valley.

The proceeds from this race go directly towards protecting this pristine forest, and although we’re a little past season, you’ll be able to enjoy Ferncliff’s remaining foliage colors. The victors of this Turkey Trot’s costume contest will win a dinner for two at the local Beekman Arms tavern, enticing runners to show up dressed as turkeys, pilgrims, corn on the cob, bowls of mashed potatoes and more.

Fortunately (or unfortunately, depending on how you look at it), Southern California stays warm year-round, so dashers in Dana Point’s Turkey Trot have some extra motivation to burn off those pumpkin pie calories – since their Thanksgiving celebrations could very well involve the beach. Fair weather aside, the Dana Point race is the holiday relay to attend, and we’re not just saying that because they own the turkeytrot.com URL. This Trot has been around for more than 40 years, and it is one of SoCal’s major traditions. Race options include a 10K, 5K and a “Gobble Wobble” one-miler for kids.

We won’t blame you if you want to refresh after this workout by taking a dip in the Atlantic — bathing suits under costumes are more than welcome.

True to Texas form, Dallas puts on a jumbo-sized Turkey Trot — there is not just one, but three races on Thanksgiving morning. To make it even better, there is a special VIP Area called “The Roost” which is truly a step up in Turkey Trot luxury. It includes assorted refreshments (beer, wine and mimosas) and snacks for fueling up pre and post-race. Dallas locals can even bring their pups along for the Dog Trot, which is just asking for some cute cornucopia costumes.
