The best way to ensure you stick to your New Year's resolutions is to keep them simple: Walk more, stand up straight, drink water, and above all else, take better care of yourself. That could mean a standing appointment for weekly blowouts, an impromptu facial, or just making time for a DIY manicure with Chinese takeout every Monday night while screening the new season of The Bachelor.

If the latter feels like the most doable starting point for you, then why not kick off the new year by treating yourself to a few fresh new polish bottles? With that in mind, we tapped our favorite nail pros to break down the biggest polish-color trends coming up for winter and through 2020. From glossy black and ballerina pearl to cinnamon spice and serene slate, scroll ahead to find your favorite — then tackle the rest of your January goals with a new mani and newly-set intentions, too.

At Refinery29, we’re here to help you navigate this overwhelming world of stuff. All of our market picks are independently selected and curated by the editorial team. If you buy something we link to on our site, Refinery29 may earn commission.

True Black

Black polish is back, according to Olive & June founder Sarah Gibson Tuttle. "Think true black, or any very dark nuanced variation, like a Bordeaux red, deep green, or midnight blue," Tuttle says. "It's all about classic, high-gloss dark tones for winter, which will continue to trend through 2020."

Pearlescent Nude

In 2019, we saw the pearl and Champagne manicures bud into micro-trends, but the true takeoff will happen in 2020. Essie global educator Rita Remark calls the trending finish "silky pearl," and says it's the perfect your-nails-but-better neutral. "Adding a touch of iridescent pearl to a nude shade dresses it up and gives the finish a silky sheen," Remark says. "My favorite is Chanel Radiant Ballerina."

Blue Gray

A deep navy blue with a touch of gray is like the polish equivalent of a clean slate. "Navy is on trend, while the cool gray undertone keeps it grounded," says celebrity manicurist Gina Alcedo. "My favorite is Essie’s Bobbing for Baubles because it’s a midnight blue with a touch of graphite gray, which feels almost serene."

Hunter Green

According to Tuttle, a dark green manicure turns from festive to chic come January. "A hunter green is a great option for a manicure that's subtle but sophisticated," she says. "You can go for more of a jeweled emerald tone, or this earthy moss, so long as it's opaque and glossy in finish."

Cinnamon

If your classic candy-apple red and trendy brown-leather manicure had a baby, it would look something like the perfect shade of cinnamon. "It's all about spice shades, like cinnamon and cayenne, browns with a hint of red," says Remark. "My favorite right now is Like Spice by Paintbox."
