When “Staying Indoors” Gives You Anxiety

I’ve always been the type of person who needs to stay moving to stay sane.

Because I work from home, it’s very important for me to get out of the house at least once a day. Even if it’s just for a walk, or a drive around my neighborhood, it somehow replenishes me and clears the fog that sometimes enters my mind when I’m staying stagnant for too long. This is a very big reason why I schedule three work out sessions a week that I’m held accountable for.

So, when we’re being advised left and right to stay home and avoid public places, I’m not going to lie that it’s stirring a bit of anxiety for me. On one hand, I will admit that my #FOMO {fear of missing out} anxiety is at an all time low. I’ve never felt more at ease opening up my social media accounts knowing that I won’t see some dreamy beach vacation or event/dinner that I’m missing. BUT on the other hand, the world is filled with such scary news that every time I open my phone it’s very hard to not go down a spiral of stress.

As many of you already know, I’m an open book about my journey with therapy and self healing. I’m very much “pro” mental health and wanted to write a post on this topic because I think it’s just as important to keep our mental health a priority.

According to Harvard Medical School, when anxiety rises because we’re facing a distressing threat like the new coronavirus, we need to focus on what tends to work for us to ease anxiety — that, plus doing a little bit more of some actions and a little bit less of others.

Here are a few suggested ways to steady yourself. But please always remember to keep in touch with what works best for you!

  • Try not to overdose on hype or misinformation. Dedicate certain allotted times to check in with the news and have a cut off point so you don’t become consumed with it.
  • Connect with friends and loved ones through video chats, phone calls, texting, and email. It really helps to feel the strength of your connections to your friends and loved ones, even though you may not be with them in person.
  • Regular meditation is very calming. Many apps teach simple forms of meditation, such as Headspace or Calm.
  • Lean into other ways to find your zen such as reading a good book or watching a good comedy.
  • Perhaps you enjoy cooking and can find comfort in eating familiar foods that you always enjoy.
  • Test out a new hobby!
  • Treat yourself with compassion. This one is very important. Now is not the time to beat yourself up over missing the gym or not keeping up with a goal.

We are all in this journey together! What are ways that you are working to keep your mental health a top priority? Leave a comment to help our friends below.
