You Have 12 New Netflix Treats To Binge Over Memorial Day Weekend — Here’s What’s Worth Watching

Happy Memorial Day Weekend, TV friends. Usually, I would be taking this time to convince you to stay in and keep watching Netflix shows, rather than running outside for your fun MDW plans. However, this long holiday weekend is unlike any other as many of us continue to shelter in place during the coronavirus pandemic.

This year, the onslaught of new Netflix original series, movies, and specials over MDW is a gift rather than curse. And, oh, what a flood it is. The highest profile new film premiering on Friday, May 22 is The Lovebirds, a high action comedy starring Issa Rae and Kumail Nanjiani. Lovebirds was initially meant to have a big theatrical debut, but as theaters around the country shut down, Paramount, its production company, struck a premiere deal with Netflix. We are lucky to have this movie sooner rather than later.

However. Lovebirds isn’t the only must-see new project out on Netflix for Memorial Day Weekend. There is a long list of bingeable series, including reality soap Selling Sunset, British competition The Big Flower Fight (which premiered on May 18), and South African YA thriller Blood & Water (which premiered on May 20). Netflix also rolled out a musical special from a Politician star, a down-home dramedy starring Jamie Lynn Spears, a second mysterious teen drama, and even more new content.

These are all the new Netflix offerings broken down by plot, genre, and whether you should watch something immediately or skip for now. Keep reading for the lowdown on all of these Netflix treats, including their trailers.

Selling Sunset (Season 2)

What is it?: Real Housewives, but with real estate brokers.

What is it about?: Two very stressful, expensive weddings. The difficulty of selling a $40 million mansion. Christine Quinn’s hair!

Selling Sunset follows the high-stakes shenanigans of The Oppenheim Group, a West Hollywood brokerage agency that specializes in slinging multi-million dollar homes. The feud between Christine Quinn — the Cheryl Blossom-esque HBIC of Oppenheim — and Chrishell Hartley, wife of This Is Us’ Justin Hartley, fueled the first season of Selling. Season 2, however, ups the stakes to a spider web of real estate infighting and excess.

See or skip?: See. Chaos and house porn-heavy Selling is an embarrassment of riches for those of us who love reality TV.

Plus, Selling season 2 has two very niche tabloid connections: it stands as the lead-up to the Hartleys’ shocking divorce and gives us insight into the new relationship of HGTV staple Tarek El Moussa. Selling star Heather Rae Young is the Flip or Flop host's new girlfriend.

The Lovebirds

What is it?: Something that made me laugh so loud I definitely annoyed my roommate.

What is it about?: The worst trip to a dinner party ever. Leilani (Issa Rae) and Jibran (Kumail Nanjiani) are a couple tumbling through a rough patch in their four-year relationship. On the way to a friend’s house, a mustachioed man waving a gun (Sweetbitter’s Paul Sparks) hops into their car and throws their life into homicidal turmoil.

The ensuing wacky adventure to find the killer may just bring Leilani and Jibran back together. And, as trailers confirm, it will at least drag them into the den of a wild sex cult.

See or skip?: See! Stars Issa Rae and Kumail Nanjiani have effortless chemistry that is genuinely sexy to boot.

The Big Flower Fight (Season 1)

Netflix premiere date: Monday, May 18

What is it?: A spiritual sister to The Great British Baking Show

What is it about?: Gigantic flower displays. Like GBBS or Next in Fashion, Big Flower Fight asks its contestants to compete in a series of challenges to find out who reigns supreme in their artistic arena of choice. In Big Flower’s case, that unsurprisingly means gigantic floral arrangements. Challenges include humongous bug-sized flower sculptures, flower-based couture, and the creation of edible thrones (go with them on this!).

Over the course of Big Flower Fight, we’re introduced to endearingly eccentric personalities who are simply passionate about their blooms.

See or skip?: See, Big Flower Fight is exactly the kind of calming content you need right now.

Ben Platt Live From Radio City Music Hall

Netflix premiere date: Wednesday, May 20

What is it?: A special to get you psyched for The Politician season 2, coming June 19

What is it about?: Tony-winner and Politician star Ben Platt giving the people a (live) show for an hour and a half. In September 2019, Platt led a solo concert at Radio City, marking the end of his tour that year. Now, the world can tune into that performance, which includes songs from his 2019 album Sing to Me Instead, some covers, and Platt's amazing blue high-waisted pants.

See or skip?: See if you desperately miss concerts — or love the musical stylings of Ben Platt. Otherwise you can skip.

Blood & Water (Season 1)

Netflix premiere date: Wednesday, May 20

What is it?: Netflix’s first-ever African-made YA show.

What is it about?: The possible connection between two South African teens: Puleng Khumalo (Ama Qamata) and Fikile Bhele (Khosi Ngema). Puleng is a working class girl whose older sister, Phumelele, was abducted hours after birth. Phume was never seen again.

After a series of coincidences, Puleng begins to wonder if Fiks, a wealthy athlete from a nearby school, is actually Phume. Soon enough, Puleng is moving heaven and earth to get close to Fiks — and get some answers. Puleng’s search for the truth becomes especially pressing when someone in her family is implicated in the 17-year-old crime of Phume's disappearance.

See or skip?: See. Blood & Water’s central mystery is even wilder than OG Riverdale plot points — and much easier to follow.

Sweet Magnolias (Season 1)

Netflix premiere date: Tuesday, May 19

What is it?: Gilmore Girls without all the lightning fast quips — and Southern accents in their place. The show where Jamie Lynn Spears plays The Other Woman.

What is it about?: Maddie Townsend (JoAnna Garcia Swisher), a mom-of-two from a small South Carolina town named Serenity. Maddie is going through a painful divorce with her cheating ex husband (Chris Klein). Luckily for Maddie, she has two best friends to help shoulder some of the burden: lawyer Helen Decatur (Heather Headley) and restaurant owner Dana Sue (Brooke Elliott).

After some prodding, Maddie agrees to renovate a local estate with her friends, officially marking a new chapter in her stressful life. Heart-to-hearts, new romances, and much gossip follows.

See or skip?: See if you need comfort TV that is the equivalent of mac and cheese. Otherwise, you can skip.

Control Z (Season 1)

What is it?: More Elite-esque TV, now that Elite might be over

What is it about?: Gossip Girl if Gossip Girl were evil rather than a messy cyberstalker who loves drama. Control Z is led by Sofia (Ana Valeria Becerril), a loner at Mexico’s National School, who uses her solo time to notice everything there is to learn about her classmates.

Sofia’s observational skills are put to work when a mysterious hacker starts leaking the deepest secrets of National’s student body. Soon enough, the high school is on the edge of chaos. Only Sofia can figure out The Hacker’s identity and save her school from destroying itself.

See or skip?: See, once you finish Blood & Water.

Patton Oswalt: I Love Everything

Netflix premiere date: Tuesday, May 19

What is it?: Stand-up from a 50-something comedian that doesn’t run on taking cheap shots at Millennials and Gen-Z

What is it about?: Comedian Patton Oswalt introducing us to his life at 50. I Love Everything opens with the BoJack Horseman voice actor complaining about the usual trappings of middle age like losing the “fun” breakfast cereals and begrudgingly needing to hike for health reasons.

Yet, Oswalt quickly gets personal. He comfortably delves into his second marriage after the abrupt death of his wife Michelle McNamara and his outlook on comedy’s #MeToo crisis as a straight, white, veteran male comedian.

See or skip?: Oswalt gets weird — but not creepily gross. If you want to hear disgraced comedians like Louis CK criticized by genuine industry peers, see. If you enjoy very silly mental images (like a bizarre subcontractor becoming “a murder tornado”), see. Otherwise, you can skip.

History 101 (Season 1)

What is it?: A quick bite of knowledge, now on Netflix.

What is it about?: Super-short lessons on modern history. History 101 uses archival footage and snazzy graphics to explain major topics like the space race, society’s increasing dependence on fast food, and the global trash emergency.

See or skip?: See, if you’re curious about a specific History episode. Skip otherwise.

The Queen and the Conqueror (Season 1)

Netflix premiere date: Wednesday, May 20

What is it?: A Spanish-language drama that was supposed to debut last week

What is it about?: The horrors of colonization — sexed up for Netflix. Queen follows Catalina (Essined Aponte, fresh off of last month’s Nicky Jam: El Ganador), an indigenous leader who is seduced and betrayed by an invading Spanish conquistador. Years later, Catalina attempts to exact her revenge.

See or skip?: If you find the very concept of an indigenous woman “falling in love” with her colonizers infuriating, skip. But, if you’re intrigued by seeing that women dedicate her life to ruining said colonizers’ lives, see. Puerto Rican actress Essined Aponte is a powerhouse as Catalina.

Betaal (Season 1)

Netflix premiere date: Sunday, May 24

What is it?: A different foreign language series about the horror of colonization. A spooky Hindi-language drama from Blumhouse Productions (who brought us films like Invisible Man, Get Out, and The Purge).

What is it about?: Zombies. A team of Indian police officers are sent to a remote village to clear the town and make way for an upcoming highway. The group is shocked to find a terrible curse and a battalion of undead British soldiers waiting to devour them.

See or skip?: If you scare easily, skip. But, if you loved Kingdom, see ASAP.

Trailer Park Boys: The Animated Series (Season 1)

What is it?: An extremely adult cartoon.

What is it about?: The Trailer Park Boys, a group of fictional petty criminals who are staples in Canadian comedy. After 12 seasons of outrageous live action behavior, the series has become a cartoon. In the second season, we see the Trailer Park crew come up against a puking birthday party clown, a supposedly rude ice cream cone, and much more bro-y comedy.

See or skip?: You can skip without an ounce of guilt.

Like what you see? How about some more R29 goodness, right here?
