Preliminary steps

  1. Washing your face
  2. Applying a face mask
  3. Exfoliation
  4. Eye serum
  5. Skin protection
  6. Moisturizer
  7. Sunscreen

Getting Started: Preliminary Steps

Before you jump in, there are a few basic steps you should take prior to establishing a men's skincare routine.

They'll help ensure you have the right tools when you get started.

handwashing sink

Make sure to wash your hands prior to touching your face.

Wash Your Hands First

This is self-explanatory. Your hands accumulate roughly 1,500 bacteria per square centimeter.

The fingernails are even worse. Each fingertip is a haven for hundreds of thousands of bacteria.

Wash your hands, gentlemen. This is the safest way to guarantee that you don't track all those germs to your face!

Use All-Natural Products

Avoid using body wash or shampoo on your face.

The reason for it is biological. The skin on your face (stratum corneum) is more sensitive than the rest of your body.

The number of skin cells on your face number fewer than the body as well, making it more susceptible to damage.  Body wash is simply too harsh on the face.

Look for natural ingredients such as…

  • White Tea Leaf Extract
  • Witch Hazel
  • Aloe Vera Juice

They each have healing properties which include anti-inflammation, acne prevention, and wound reparation.

Know Your Skin Type

This is essential when it comes to an effective men's skincare routine.

  • Eudermic (normal) skin: Use a basic routine with an emphasis on Vitamin C. Look for products heavy with alpha-hydroxy acids for even smoother skin.
  • Dry skin: Adopt a routine with a focus on moisturizing. Hunt down products with aloe, glycerin, and hyaluronic acids.  These will help counteract the dryness and the damage that comes from it.
  • Oily skin: Use washes with mild exfoliants and salicylic acid. If you apply a bit of serum after each wash, you'll trick the skin into producing less sebum.
  • Combination (oily & dry) skin: Prioritize lotion-based cleansers and hyaluronic serums.
  • Sensitive skin: opt for milk-based or cream cleansers. Avoid any chemical fragrances. Look for tea-based extracts that won't trigger a reaction.
  • Mature (wrinkled) skin: Get a routine heavy with moisturizer. Use lotion-based cleansers.
face wash

Never use water that's too hot or too cold. Moderation is key.

Using The Right Water Temperature

Hot water causes irritation and dryness. On the other hand, cold water closes the pores and defeats the purpose of washing the face.

Start with warm water. Turn the water to be about 100 degrees Fahrenheit (40 degrees Celsius) to soften the face and keep the pores open.

End with cool water at 60 degrees Fahrenheit (15 degrees Celsius) to close them back up when you finish.

Got it? Good. Now we can delve into the right men's skincare routine.

Men's Skincare Routine 1. Washing Your Face

You should wash your face twice a day.

Once in the morning to remove any oil and sweat gained while you slept. If you hit the gym in the mornings, wait until after you exercise.

Wash a second time in the evening before bed in order to remove any grime, sweat, and pollution accumulated throughout the day.

Wet your face with warm water. Drop a nickel-sized dollop of face wash on your fingers, then rub them together to lather up.

Move your hands in upward circular motions when applying to the face. This prevents stretching caused by pulling down on the skin.

It also activates lymph circulation to reduce redness and give your face a healthier glow.

After about 2o seconds, rinse your face with warm water and pat it dry with a towel. DO NOT use the same towel you use for your body, because that's just nasty.

Make sure not to rub with the towel. Once again, this stretches the skin and can cause wrinkles over time!

This is the first phase of any men's skincare routine.

Men's Skincare Routine 2. Applying A Face Mask

Want to take it to the next level? Get a deeper cleanse by using face masks.

It may sound feminine, but this helps dig deep into your pores and clean them out to a degree a regular wash can't.

Not only do they unclog pores, but masks with Aloe Vera and Coconut Oil double down on hydration and rejuvenation. They also support the performance of your other products.

Apply a mask once or twice a week. Spread the mask over your face (and neck if you want) with an even layer.

Relax. let it sit for 15-20 minutes.

How do you remove it? Simple. Wet your hands and start massaging the mask. Once it reaches a creamy texture, you can simply rinse it off.

Men's Skincare Routine 3. Exfoliation

Exfoliation means the removal of dead skin cells – often with a granular substance. This is why exfoliants often have that sandy texture.

The process removes dead skin cells thoroughly, increasing moisture absorption while helping to unclog pores.

Regular exfoliation can improve collagen production – which aids in making your skin glow. It also improves skin elasticity.

So, how is it done?

Do it twice a week. Exfoliating more than two times can damage the skin. Additionally, do not do it on the same day as your mask.

Following your wash, dampen your face with warm water and apply a dime-sized amount of scrub (exfoliant) to your palms.

Same deal as with the wash – rub your hands together to spread it before applying it to your face.

use soft, circular strokes similar to the wash before rinsing with cool water and patting your face dry.

Never neglect this crucial aspect of your men's skincare routine.

Men's Skincare Routine 4. Adding Eye Serum

If you suffer from dark circles, crow's feet, or wrinkles, then this is for you.

Serums help supply blood vessels around the eyes with more oxygen. The skin in this region is especially sensitive, making it more susceptible to the serum's effects.

They penetrate deep, which is why your local circulatory function is improved.

eye brows

The skin around the eye is more sensitive and absorbent than the rest of your face.

What should you look for?

  • Grapefruit Peel Oil: Common natural ingredient which offers a refreshing scent and prevents acne.
  • Rosehip Seed Oil: Strong with Vitamin A, which promotes skin regeneration.
  • Bilberry Fruit Extract: Good source of antioxidants, which shield the skin and protect it against irritation.

Place a pea-sized drop on the tips of your fingers before gently applying it around your eyes.

Never apply it to the eyelid, you want to focus on the skin just below your eye.

Given how easily the skin around your eyes absorbs moisture, there's no need to rub it in!

Men's Skincare Routine 5. Apply Skin Protector

Anti-aging skin protectors combat wrinkles on several levels. They slow age to a crawl by constantly activating new skin cells and protecting against UV rays from the sun.

The result is vibrant skin with superior elasticity.

It also preps the skin for your moisturizer, facilitating absorption. Think of it like a sponge. A dry sponge won't absorb a stain, but a wet one will.

Ensure that your skin protector has Vitamin C. If possible, look for Kakadu plum – a natural antioxidant that has more Vitamin C than any other food.

Why Vitamin C? It's a powerful tool for tissue reparation. It's involved in loads of body functions – not just skin – and strengthens the immune system.

When it comes to skin, it protects skin cells against free radicals. It slows down melanin production, which helps your skin keep a lighter complexion and even out your skin tone.

Finally, it helps that priceless glow.

Apply it in the evenings if you are 30 years old or older. Use a pea-sized amount on your fingertips and lather it against your jaw, cheeks, and forehead.

From your chin, gently spread it across your jaw, cheeks, and temples. End at your eyebrows and hairline.

This technique helps the protector penetrate the skin, and the massage also tightens and rejuvenates.

Men's Skincare Routine 6. Lathering Moisturizer

Moisturizer is an absolute necessity. You need to use it every time you wash your face – that means twice a day on average.

The benefits of skin moisturizers are self-explanatory. Ingredients such as Aloe Vera, Shea Butter, and Argireline work together to nourish the face and improve the skin's texture.

Put a nickel-sized drop on your palms and rub them together.

Just like the wash – spread it across your face in even, upward circular motions.

Take care not to apply too much pressure. Hard rubbing creates friction, which will cause the water content to evaporate before it can help the skin.

Let the moisturizer sit for one minute before moving on to the next step.

Men's Skincare Routine 7 (Bonus). The Magic Of Sunscreen

UV rays cause extensive damage even if you can't see it right away.

They damage the DNA in skin cells, which in turn cause mutations and defects. This can eventually lead to premature aging AND cancer.

This is why sunscreen each morning is so important.

What should you avoid? Chemical ingredients such as oxybenzone, retinyl palmitate, and parabens.

sunset

The Academy of Dermatology recommends sunscreen with 30 SPF or higher.

Look for these instead:

  • Coconut Oil: Great for healing wounds, reducing inflammation, and protect the skin from bacteria.
  • Shea Butter: Softens the skin thanks to the high number of fatty acids.
  • Carrot Seed Oil: Main defense against UV rays. It helps smooth lines, counteract sun damage, and is packed with vitamins.

Apply it generously to your face in the morning before you head out. Make sure to do it after the moisturizer dried.

Give it time to work! Wait about 15 minutes before going outside.
