5 Fall Nail Art Trends That Are A Breath Of Fresh Air

We can't say the fall nail polish trends of 2020 came as a complete surprise. Variations on moody khaki, tortoiseshell brown, and glossy navy tend to circulate with the seasons. But the accompanying nail-art designs this year are far less predictable — and feel like a breath of fresh air during this
strange back-to-school season of continued social distancing and working from home.

From mismatched manis to smiley faces, find the offbeat trends our favorite celebrity manicurists are forecasting for the fall, ahead.

Cowhide Print

Like cow print 2.0, cowhide nails are popping up all over Instagram. The key difference between the OG and this new iteration is the softer (and more seasonal) color palette: not stark white with black spots, but milky eggshell and dark brown. We love this version by Massachusetts-based studio, Paragon Nails.

Burgundy & Gold

According to celebrity manicurist Tom Bachik, the most notable nail-art trend of the season will riff off the classic fall tone of burgundy. "I love these '90s-inspired burgundy shades as a base for art," says Bachik. "Then, the perfect complement is a neutral metallic, like gold." For your design, consider the minimalist cuticle stripe, inspired by L.A.-based nail pro Amy Le.

Mismatched Mani

The asymmetrical or mismatched manicure — with a different design on each finger — will continue to trend into fall. We love this take by London-based nail studio Imarni Nails, because it brings every possible design trend together, from polka dots and orbit nails, to negative-space graphics and the smiley faces.

Orange Abstract

Heading into the season of pumpkin spice lattes and chunky knit sweaters, you'll find yourself reaching for a burnt orange nail polish. But, give the seasonal manicure some pizazz by adding abstract lines using neutral, but complementing shades of white and gold, like Hollywood manicurist Queenie Nguyen.

Smiley Face

To match the tie-dye loungewear you're still living in, opt for a bright-yellow manicure with smiley face art, modeled after this look from L.A. nail studio Color Camp. According to celebrity manicurist Mei Kawajiri, the happy design is on the rise. "I recently gave Dua Lipa the smiley-face manicure," she says. "And now, everyone wants to try it."
