Natural Hair Care: 11 Tips to Regrow Your Hairline

By Jacqueline Samaroo

We tend to put a lot of effort into perfectly styling those cute baby hairs at our hairline. Getting them to lay just right is kind of a natural hair art form. That’s why a hairline that is fading, patchy, or (worse) all gone can be quite distressing.

The good news is it is possible to regrow your natural hairline. All you need are the right approach, some tender loving care, and time. We’ll share 11 tips with you for how it can be done.

1. Find the cause of your hair loss.

The first step to regrowing those precious baby hairs is finding the cause of your hair loss. Once you figure that out, you will be better able to tackle it and start regrowing your edges.

Common reasons for hairline loss in natural hair include:

  • Tension from braids and other tight hairstyles.
  • Heat damage from styling tools.
  • Friction from headbands and headscarves.
  • Over-manipulation or constant styling.

2. Be gentle with your baby hairs.

Those fine hairs growing at your edges are quite fragile. They will break easily if over-manipulated. Lay off laying your edges for a while if you notice breakage or your natural hairline beginning to thin.

3. Moisturize your hairline.

Dry hair is susceptible to breakage. So, keeping your edges hydrated and moisturized is key. They protect both the hair that is still there and the new growth that’s coming up. Moisturizers with shea butter, Jamaican black castor oil, or almond oil are good choices.

4. Deep condition.

Deep conditioning takes moisturizing your hairline up a notch (or two). If you deep condition your hair regularly, pay close attention to your edges each time. You could also deep condition just your edges more often.

5. Do a protein treatment.

Your natural hair is mostly protein which helps to give it structure and strengthen it. If your baby hairs seem particularly limp and weak, then a lack of protein may be to blame. A monthly protein treatment may be just what they need.

6. Be wary of tight styles.

You may need to change your hairstyling habits in order to regrow your hairline. Avoid styles that put too much tension on your edges, such as too-tight braids and ponytails.

7. Avoid friction on your edges, too.

Cute hats, functional headbands, stylish scarves, and bodacious wigs are great alternatives when you want to mix up your style. But, they rub along your hairline so wearing them too often puts your baby hairs at risk. Cut back on how often you wear them or avoid them completely while you regrow your hairline.

8. Scalp massage with restorative oils.

A gentle massage increases blood circulation and promotes natural hair growth. You can boost the effects by adding a restorative oil, such as Jamaican black castor oil, to your hairline and massage it in. It’s OK to do this daily and allow the oil to nourish and cleanse the scalp of your hairline.

9. Be careful with heat.

High heat can be very damaging to natural hair. Your baby hairs aren’t strong enough to withstand high temperatures, such as from a flat iron, on a regular basis.  So, limit direct heat on your hairline. If you use direct heat on the rest of your hair, always use a heat protectant first and heat-style clean hair only. Greasy and/or dirty hair scorches easily.

10. Eat a balanced diet.

A balanced diet supplies the nutrients your scalp and hair follicles need for strong, healthy hair.  Also try to avoid foods that are bad for natural hair growth, such as processed grains and added sugar. Do you think your nutrient intake could use a boost? Talk to your doctor about taking a vitamin supplement for hair growth.

11. Be patient.

Patience is definitely a virtue when you are working to regrow your hairline. It will take time. Just remember to keep up the routine of nursing those baby hairs back. Then, once they are back, be sure to take really good care of them.
