What is Ayurveda?

Ayurveda is a traditional system of medicine that has been practiced on the Indian subcontinent for more than 3000 years. In Western countries, it is used as a form of complementary and alternative medicine (CAD). It is also used as a form of integrative medicine. This is a holistic approach that combines traditional and modern therapies for general health and wellbeing as well as for the treatment of illnesses.

There is plenty in the teachings and practices of Ayurveda that have to do with hair growth as well as with the treatment of hair loss. Why are hair oils important to Black hair growth?

Our scalp produces sebum – a natural oily/waxy substance. It helps to lubricate, moisturize, and nourish the scalp. Sebum also travels along the strands of hair performing these same functions. However, thanks to those curls, coils, and kinks that we love so very much, sebum has a hard time traveling from root to tip of the strands. The result? Textured hair tends to be on the dry and brittle side. These lead to the breakage that robs us of length retention.

Thankfully, we can use hair oils to carry out the same functions as sebum.

• Hair oils assist with lubrication, adding shine for a healthy glow and slip for easy detangling.
• They moisturize the strands, too, helping to maintain their protein-moisture balance. This is vital for both elasticity and strength of the strands.
• Hair oils provide nutrients that help our hair to thrive.
