It’s the Oscars this Sunday – and we’ll be watching on Monday afternoon or night. In anticipation, we’ve outlined which films could win ‘Best Film’ – based on their Rotten Tomatoes rating. A film can live or die based on its critical acclaim and reviews and online casino guide, Japan-101, has looked at the films up for best picture at the 2023 Oscars and combined these with Rotten Tomatoes rating to reveal which one comes up the best.

And the results are:   

• Top Gun: Maverick has the highest overall rating on Rotten Tomatoes at 97.5% 
• Triangle of Sadness has the lowest audience rating of 70% 
• Three of the ten films have an overall rating above 90% 

At the top we have Top Gun: Maverick. This Top Gun sequel film is centred around Cruise’s naval aviator character originated in 1986, and it aired to much anticipation. Due to a lot of hard work on the producer’s and actor’s parts, the film didn’t let fans down and it received an audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes of 99% – the highest of all the films. 

Everything Everywhere All at Once comes in second, right behind Top Gun: Maverick. This film is about a Chinese immigrant trying to save the multiverse as different versions of herself. It garnered an impressive 95% from critics and 88% from audiences, resulting in an overall rating of 91.5%. 

Coming in third in the list of Oscars nominees is All Quiet on the Western Front. The only film to be released on Netflix, this film is about a group of friends from Germany who enlist to serve in the First World War. On Rotten Tomatoes it comes in very closely behind Everything Everywhere All at Once with a rating of 90.5%. 

For All Quiet on the Western Front, the audience rating and the critics’ rating are the closest together of all the films at 91% and 90% respectively.

Rounding out the top four is The Fabelmans. Based on Steven Spielberg’s childhood, the film has a critics’ rating of 92% but an audience rating of just 83%, producing an overall rating of 87.5%.

With the largest gap between the two ratings, The Banshees of Inisherin came in fifth with an overall Rotten Tomatoes rating of 85.5%. Starring Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson as friends with a complex relationship in a remote island off the coast of the west of Ireland, this film’s overall rating is made up from 96% from critics and 75% from the audience.

Next up is Elvis. Matching The Banshees of Inisherin’s overall rating of 85.5%, Elvis seems to have been more favorable with the audience than the critics. It has an audience rating of 94% while the critics’ rating was just 77%.

Following Elvis is Women Talking, featuring Claire Foy, Jessie Buckley and Frances McDormand. This film is about women living in a devout commune attempting to bring their abusers to justice. Just like Elvis and The Banshees of Inisherin, Women Talking has an overall Rotten Tomatoes rating of 85.5% due to its 91% critics’ rating and 80% audience rating.

Avatar: The Way of Water, another sequel to feature this year coming 13 years after its 2009 origin film, just missed out on coming last according to Rotten Tomatoes thanks to its 92% audience rating and it’s 76% critics’ rating – giving it 84% overall.

Tár, starring Cate Blanchett as an orchestral conductor, just missed out on coming last with 91% critic’s rating and 73% audience rating, bringing its overall rating to 82%. 

Finally, Triangle of Sadness is a film is about the expectations of the super-rich and what ensues when a trip goes horribly wrong. It received a 70% rating from viewers and 72% from critics, which made up its overall rating of 71%.

Last year’s winner, CODA, a film about a hard of hearing family trying to survive in a hearing world, had a rating of 92.5% overall from Rotten Tomatoes. This gives some indication that a high overall rating on Rotten Tomatoes is a good indication of which film could win at the Oscars.

It all depends though on whether it’s the audience’s choice or the critic’s choice which is most important. With an audience rating of 99% on Rotten Tomatoes, Top Gun: Maverick looks to be in a very good position. And with a critic’s rating of 96% this makes this film one of the top contenders.

A spokesperson for Japan-101 said: “It’s interesting how much the ratings vary from film to film. Often audiences might look at a rating to determine if they’ll watch a film – the higher a rating, the more successful it’s likely to be.

“All the films average quite highly, though a 26.5% gap between Triangle of Sadness and Top Gun: Maverick is quite significant.

“If the audience’s chose the best and worst films it’s clear things would be very different to the critics’ choices.”  

METHODOLOGY: Using data from Rotten Tomatoes, the films up for best film at the Oscars were compared according to their ratings. They were then compared to that of last year’s winner to suggest which might win if the ratings determined the winner.
