The vast majority of weddings we attend, we attend as guests.

Being a well-dressed guest is a sort of wedding gift in miniature — a bit of time, effort, and often expense, given to the bride and groom as part of their experience.

So what should a man wear to a wedding to create this effect?

“Neat and tasteful” are the thoughtful wedding guest’s watchwords. You’re not trying to be the center of attention, just to look nice within the standards of the dress code.

For most weddings a guest’s clothing responsibilities are simple:

• Know the dress code and follow it
• Make a special effort for the occasion
• Avoid anything too ostentatious

Know And Meet The Dress Code

Our next section looks at dress codes in detail — use it if you need the help!

What a man should wear to a wedding is whatever will fit in with what the bride and groom (or wedding planners) are expecting from their audience.

That will almost always be printed in the wedding invitation. If the invitation makes no mention of dress code at all, assume that business dress or the higher end of business-casual would be welcome — colored suits are probably fine, as are dress trousers and blazers, but you can reasonably expect to wear a jacket and tie of some kind unless the invitation specifically says not to.

For weddings with one of the different types of dress codes, wear the best example you have of the standard.

That is to say, have a proper black-tie ensemble (no colored accents, clip-ons, etc.) for a black-tie wedding, a dark suit with a white dress shirt and a conservative tie for a “business dress” wedding, and so on.

The more casual the code, the more flexibility you have. You always want to err on the side of formality though. Outside of costume weddings, a man should almost always have at least some sort of jacket.

If the invitation calls for casual dress, you can wear blue jeans with a suit or sports jacket. You'll be both within the dress code and neatened up for the occasion.

Make A Special Effort

In the case of a black-tie dress code (or even more formal) wedding, you’ve already made a significant effort with your outfit.

For more casual weddings, find a way to “dress up” whatever outfit you wear, as a gesture to show how special the occasion is.

This can be something very minor. A fresh flower boutonnière is always a good option. They are easily available at almost any florist with a day or two’s notice. Most florists can even create one in a pinch from whatever they have in stock.

Other small bits of jewelry or adornment also work well: your grandfather’s watch, a colorful pocket square, French cuffs with gold cufflinks — the specific gesture is going to vary from man to man and wedding to wedding.

But the point is always the same. Wear something nice that you wouldn’t normally wear, even with the particular outfit or dress code you’re using.

That way even a good business suit or a casual shirt and jeans can become a special outfit just for the wedding, rather than something you’d wear to work.

Exercise Moderation

At the risk of sounding old-fashioned, overly competitive wedding clothes are usually more of a problem on the bride’s side of the aisle. But that doesn’t mean men can’t get involved in it, and it’s always bad taste.

As a wedding guest, what you wear should not be centered around how to stylishly stand out. You should look good, not fancy.

The bride and to a lesser extent the groom and their respective parties should be the center of attention. Don’t wear something that’s going to compete with that.

That means erring on the conservative side unless you are an important figure in the ceremony. Knowing what to wear as the father of the bride is very different. As a standard guest, avoid anything that’s obviously very expensive or a “luxury” item.

Wear a nice watch; don’t wear a diamond-encrusted Rolex. Wear a good silk tie; don’t wear cloth-of-gold or hand-woven Moroccan spider silk. And so on.

As a general rule of thumb, if you can rely on it to be a conversation piece (“Oh, where did you get that amazing…?”), it’s probably a little tasteless to wear it at someone else’s wedding.

So, what should a man wear to a wedding? Well, there's no one answer. There are gray areas. Feel around for the right balance of looking nice without showing off.

But, err on the side of caution. It’s someone else’s day when it is all said and done.

You’re dressed so sharp you could cut atoms. She looks you up and down…

… you see her falter when she gets to your shoes. What have you done wrong?

We all know you can tell a man by his shoes. When you need the perfect dress shoes, which style do you pick?

The simplest and most elegant solution is a pair of wholecut shoes – more specifically, wholecute OXFORDS. In my opinion, they’re the only dress shoes you’ll ever really need.

What Are Wholecut Shoes And Wholecut Oxfords?

There are three things that make wholecut shoes classed as wholecut Oxfords:

Wholecut Shoes Feature #1. One Piece

This is the ‘wholecut’ part. Most dress shoes are made from several pieces of leather stitched together. In a wholecut dress shoe, the upper (the part visible above the sole when the shoe is worn) is cut from one whole piece.

Apart from the seam at the edge of the shaft (where you put your foot in), they only have a single visible seam at the heel. There are no extra parts like separate vamps or quarters.

Wholecut Shoes Feature #2. Closed Laces

This is the ‘oxford’ part. An oxford shoe is one with ‘closed’ lacing, where the eyelet tabs are attached under the vamp.

Classy as they are, you might be surprised to learn that you can wear these shoes with jeans.

Technically, less decoration on a shoe means more formality, but wholecuts are above the rules. They are luxury shoemaking in its simplest and purest form, combining the swagger of patent leather tuxedo pumps with the practicality of lace-up shoes.

This means they can be worn with any outfit formal enough to pair with a jacket—including a sports jacket with jeans.

#3. Wholecut Oxfords: Quality

No other shoe pattern is as exclusive and expensive to make as the wholecut style.

The hides that are used to make shoe leather have to be free from marks and blemishes. When you’re making shoes out of small pieces, that’s one thing—you only need a few inches that are free of marks.

But wholecuts need to be made from one big flawless piece of the highest quality leather—and what’s more, the whole piece has to have a consistent texture.

Not only are skins this perfect rare, but the type of skin used (usually calfskin) is more expensive—plus the making of wholecuts requires more leather, because they only have one seam.

Then the shoes have to be painstakingly assembled by an expert craftsman. From the point of view of a shoemaker, wholecut oxfords are among the most difficult shoe styles to last (lasting is when the upper part is attached to the lower part.)

All this means wholecut oxfords cost considerably more to make than regular shoes—but that means they have an aura of prestige and desirability that marks you as a successful man.

#4. Wholecut Oxfords: Shine

Wholecuts have the most brilliant, mirror-like shine of any dress shoe. This is partly because of the luxury skins used, but also due to the style.

With no stitching to get in the way, not only do they absorb polish better than other styles, they display shine better too. The stitching does not become shiny, and without extra folds of leather, you’re assured of a smooth and consistent shine across the whole surface.

When NOT To Wear Wholecut Oxford Dress Shoes

Yes – perfect as they are, wholecuts may not be perfect for every man. Here’s why.

• Because of their slim narrow shape and closed laces, they are likely to feel tight if you have wide feet. Cap toe oxfords will be more comfortable for you.
• Men with a high arch may also find them tight, especially across the bridge of the foot.
• If creases develop in the leather, they’re going to show. With no toe cap or wing cap, imperfections have nowhere to hide. The upside of this is that just like an immaculate white dress shirt, when they look perfect, they look really perfect.

When And How To Wear Wholecut Oxford Shoes

When you buy your wholecut shoes, make sure they fit snugly – because they mould themselves to your feet, the leather will stretch slightly over the first few wears. A thinner leather is especially likely to stretch.

If an outfit goes with a jacket, it goes with wholecut Oxfords – but don’t try anything below the level of classic business casual, or they’ll start to look out of place.

One exception: avoid pairing wholecut shoes with heavy, textured clothes. Their sleek, slim lines will make your feet look small by comparison, so choose bigger shoes instead.

Brown or tan wholecut shoes go perfectly with jeans. Make sure you choose well-fitted, dark indigo jeans with no rips or signs of heavy wear.

Q: I’ve heard in the past that horizontal stripes make someone look wider and vertical stripes make them look taller and thinner. But I keep seeing studies going back and forth whether this is true. Who do I believe?

A: Three decades or so of research on this question have yielded inconsistent results. A more recent study seems to show that this is because the answer is actually more complicated than we all would like.

BACKGROUND:

There’s a famous optical illusion called the Helmholtz Illusion, discovered by a man named Helmholtz in 1867.

• Which of these squares looks thinner and taller than the other? Most people would say the left square looks thinner and taller.

But that seems to go against the conventional wisdom that horizontal stripes make a person look fatter/wider. Wouldn’t it be the other way around?

• A number of studies have tested this effect and have found conflicting results. Why would fashion work differently than this famous optical illusion?
• Three Japanese researchers noticed some interesting patterns in the previous research. They all presented pictures of models wearing either horizontal or vertical stripes. However, they weren’t using the same models: some were fat and some were thin. Additionally, they were all shaded differently. And finally, they were presented in various orders.
• These researchers decided there were multiple factors at play here and published a study testing their hypotheses in the journal i-Perception in 2013.
• The researchers did a number of studies testing the possibility that three factors were influencing all the previous research on this subject that has been conducted:

Whether the model is slim or fat.

Whether previous judgments of other people influence later judgments of different people.

Whether judgments are so varied between people that the whole thing isn’t very useful.

EXPERIMENT:

• 31 undergraduate students (63% female) were recruited for the study.
• The students were placed in a chair and put their chin in a chin rest that ensured that their eyes were a certain distance from a computer screen.
• A number of computer images were flashed in the screens depicting people wearing clothing with either horizontal or vertical lines.
  • The size of the images was digitally altered to be either slim or wide.
• Two figures were shown side-by-side for 1.8 seconds. One had horizontal stripes and the other had vertical stripes. Then, participants were to judge which of the images were fatter and press a key indicating their response.
• This method was done 20 times with slim figures and 20 times with fat figures, or with the fat figures first and then the slim figures.

RESULTS:

So what do you think – is conventional wisdom true for fashion, or is the Helmholtz Illusion the main driving factor?

• The conventional wisdom was not found to be true. Horizontal stripes don’t make people look fatter and vertical stripes don’t make people look slimmer and taller.
• BUT sometimes the stripes didn’t really make a difference at all.

Which factors influenced whether the Helmholtz Illusion held true for the figures?

• Size of the Model:

• YES. Slender models look even thinner with horizontal stripes (supporting the Helmholtz Illusion and going against conventional wisdom).
• But this effect was not as strong for the wide models – for wide models, the type of stripe BY ITSELF actually didn’t have as much of an influence at all.
• Order of Presentation:

• YES. Here’s an interesting result. When SLENDER models were shown first to people, and then wide models, the Helmholtz Illusion was strongest of all (Horizontal stripes make people seem taller and slenderer) for both groups. This applied to both fat and slender images. Again, conventional wisdom does not seem to hold.
• When the wide models were shown first, the type of stripe did NOT seem to matter for anyone.
• Variance Between Observers:

• YES. Significantly, the researchers found that, even though there were noticeable results when they compared averages, there was a wide variety of results across all participants.

DISCUSSION:

So how do we interpret the results of this experiment? Here are some important conclusions that can be inferred from the results:

In no case was the conventional wisdom found to be true. Horizontal stripes did not, on the whole, make someone look wider. Vertical stripes, on the whole, did not make a person look taller and slimmer.

In fact, where there was an effect, it supported the opposite conclusion.

Horizontal stripes made slender people look taller and slenderer.

On the fatter models, the kinds of stripes made much less difference.

People’s judgments seemed to be more influenced by what models they had previously judged.

For some reason (that the authors did not fully understand) when participants judged a large group of slender people first, the Helmholtz Illusion got very strong.

What does this mean for laypeople?

It means that when we view a person, we are mentally comparing them to people we have already seen.

Here’s the (very strange but scientifically supported) bottom line:

• If a fat person is going to an event full of thin people, horizontal stripes may actually make them look slimmer and taller.

Why? The researchers weren’t sure.

Finally, there was another big take-away:

There was so much variation between participants in the study that the researchers concluded that stripes may not really, on the whole, make that huge of a difference.

This would explain why all the previous studies since the ‘80s were inconsistent.

This makes it seem like, unless you want to make a calculated, complex decision based on the results in this study, you might make your fashion selections based on other factors instead of whether the stripes are horizontal or vertical.

Whenever science doesn’t seem to go one way or the other, I say trust your own personal judgment.
