Shower Hack #1: Utilize a Navy Style Shower

Did you wake up late? Maybe you think your water bill is too high? This hack is perfect for you.

A navy shower is a method of showering that minimizes the amount of time you spend in the shower and conserves the most water.

This style of shower was originated in the United States Navy and was aimed at conserving the supply of fresh water. Often on board ship, the amount of fresh water reserves were scarce and the ships' ability to filter salt water would often stop working.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the average length of a shower lasts 8 minutes. An 8 minute shower uses on average 17.2 gallons (65.11 liters) of water. A navy style shower only uses around 3 gallons (11.36 liters) of water.

That is a huge difference.

The total time of the shower is two minutes. Yes – that's all. All it takes is 3 easy steps:

1. 1. Get Wet – jump into the shower, turn on the water and get your entire body wet.
   2. Clean Yourself – turn off the water, lather up your entire body with your body soap and shampoo and conditioner.
   3. Rinse Yourself – turn the water back on and rinse all of your body completely off.

Navy style showers can also be called a “combat shower,” a  “military shower,” a “sea shower,” a “staggered shower” or a “G.I. bath.”

This hack can be extremely useful for a man in any situation. If you wake up late, take a navy style shower to get ready quicker. If you have kids at home always bothering you, take a navy style shower to get out of their way quicker.

Single or married, this hack is useful for any man and is great for the environment.

 

Shower Hack #2: Use a Shower Mirror to Shave

Shower mirrors are a relatively new invention that can you can use as a hack to save time and get the closest shave possible.

I know what you're thinking: the mirror will just get foggy. Wrong!

Shower mirrors are fog-free and there are two main types of these mirror.

Pre-Treated Shower Mirrors

 

The most popular style of shower mirror is a pre-treated mirror. These are coated with a chemical mixture (similar to a polymer) that covers the surface of the mirror preventing it from having fog.

While a cheap and easy version of a shower mirror, the biggest issue is that these mirrors will wear out and need to be replaced.

Anytime you use your shower, the chemical film begins to wear off. This leads to needing replacement mirrors frequently.

Fixed Water-Heated Shower Mirrors

A Fixed Water-Heated mirror is your second most popular option for a shower mirror and requires a little of installation.

To install, you would just remove the shower head from the shower wall pipe. After this, you will add a plumbing connector (which is included with most mirrors) and then reconnect the shower head properly. From there, you would just connect the mirror to the plumbing connector and you're done.

When installed properly, a small amount of water from your shower will circulate through a copper coil embedded in the shower mirror. As the water circulates, it warms the mirrors to the same temperature as the shower water, making it impossible for fog to form. The water completes its circuit by traveling back up through the flexible arm and out into the shower stream.

Either option you choose, you will be able to shave your face when it is the easiest to do so. The steam from your shower will naturally soften the hair on your face and give you the smoothest shave you have ever felt.

Important Razor-Care Precautions

It is important to not keep your razor in the shower. A razor left in the shower is a breeding ground for bacteria. It's especially worse if you are using a disposable razor.

This will lead to infections in your face and more pimples as your pores are open from the hot water and the steam and bacteria will easily get into them.

Just keep your razor in your bathroom cupboard when you're done using it.

Never use your phone as a mirror in the shower.

First of all, we spend over $1,000 for phones and you could easily damage it in the shower.

Second of all, big brother could be watching you. Do you really want people to see you like that?

Unless you like the idea of anyone seeing you naked in the shower or destroying that $1,000+ phone, keep your phone away from the inside of your shower.

Shower Hack #3: Use a Robust Exfoliator

Using an exfoliator might be the most important thing you can do for overall skin care. While some of you may already be exfoliating your face, you should also be exfoliating your entire body.

Exfoliating your body will remove dead skin cells, unclog pores and prevent acne. This process will also improve the overall skin tone of your body and soften your skin texture.

If you just wash your body with your hands, you are dropping the ball and not getting your body as clean as you could.

One of the best tools to use for this is a loofah.

The “sponge-like” loofah are believed by most scientists to have originated in Asia or Africa. The early versions were originally called a “Luffa gourd” which was grown from the Luffa plant. A Luffa plant is vine which is part of the cucumber family.

Incredibly, carbon dating revealed that the Luffa gourd was brought to North America over 9000 years ago.

The Luffa plant was one of the first domesticated crops made by early European settlers in the North American colonies.

Today, loofahs can be made from natural or synthetic materials. Natural loofah still come from the original plant. Natural loofahs will last 4-6 weeks before it will need to be replaced.

The synthetic loofahs are much easier to find though. Typically, a synthetic loofah will need to be replaced after 3 weeks of use as it will begin to accumulate bacteria and become worn out.

You can extend the life of a synthetic loofah by cleaning it weekly. To clean it throughly, soak it in diluted bleach for 5 minutes and then rinse it throughly. If you don't want to use bleach because of the nature of it, put it in your dishwasher and run it for a cycle.

Another great tool to use is a back scrubber. A back scrubber will help you to reach those hard to reach places on your back.

Much like a loofah, a back scrubber can massage your back, exfoliate the skin and work in your favorite soap or body wash. This doesn't just have to just be used on your back. I would recommend having a back scrubber with boar bristles; this will do a better job exfoliating than the scrubbers that use plastic nodules.

Shower Hack #4: Moisturize Your Skin Immediately After Showering

Much like shaving during or after a shower, the best time to moisturize your skin is immediately after a shower.

Boston Cometic Surgeon Dr. Michael S. Kaminer states that the best time to apply body lotion is directly after showering.

“Your skin has the most moisture when it's wet, and most moisturizers work best when the skin is already hydrated,” said Dr. Michael S. Kaminer on the moisturizing your skin.

He also states that after a shower water can evaporate off your skin quickly which will leave your skin feeling dry.

Dry skin is uncomfortable and can make you look much older by exacerbating wrinkles and fine line. The best way to avoid this is to apply body lotion after your shower while your skin is still moist.

It is simple: just lightly pat yourself with a towel so that your skin remains damp and then apply your moisturizer of choice to your body.

It is important to not use a face moisturize on your body. These are not strong enough to penetrate the skin on your body. It is best to get a moisturizer or lotion that is specifically designed for the tougher skin on your body.

The Importance of a Natural Moisturizer

It is also important to get a body moisturizer that is made with natural ingredients and not synthetic ingredients. Most normal moisturizers use artificial ingredients and preserving methods so that the shelf life of their product is longer.

Using cold water to rinse conditioner allow more of the nutrients to lock into your scalp and hair follicles as your pores will close as soon as the cold water hits them .

Dr. Abraham Armani, M.D., a board-certified hair transplant surgeon states that this trick is based on the anatomy of the hair shaft. He states that the cuticle is the the outermost part of the hair and resembles the shingles on a roof. These “shingles” will open and close depending on the temperature of the water you use to wash your hair.

The best practice is to get your hair wet with warm water and to rinse your shampoo with this warm water. This warm water should be around 100 degrees Fahrenheit (40 degrees Celsius). This will allow the pores and hair follicles to open up but not to damage your hair or skin.

After rinsing your shampoo out with warm water, apply your conditioner and leave it in for the specified time. While waiting, change your water from warm to cool and then rinse the conditioner out gently. The cool water should be around 70 degrees Fahrenheit (21 degrees Celsius).

Again, it is very important to make sure your water is not extremely hot or extremely cold – neither are good for your skin or hair.

This will lock in all of the moisturizing ingredients and give you less frizz in your hair if you have curly hair. Your hair will also lay more smoothly as the cells in your hair will be closed and will give your hair a healthier appearance.

 

Shower Hack #6: Trim Your Toenails After Showering

Ever struggle to cut your toenails easily? Ever felt embarrassed by your toenails and not want to take your socks off around a woman? This is one of the best shower hacks for you.

Cutting your toenails after showering is an easy way to make trimming toenails painless and easy. Once again, the hot water and steam from your shower will soften your toenails.

This also happens to your fingernails. It is not be the best idea to trim your fingernails after a shower. With the increase in softness of your nails, the likelihood of cracking a nail goes way up.

If you want an easier fingernail trim, then go for it after a shower. Just be very careful and go slowly.

It is important to invest in a quality manicure set. I know what you're thinking: “Guys don't need to file their nails.” Wrong. It is the 21st century, time to let go of old preconceptions.

A quality manicure set will include at least the following: a nail clipper, a nail scissor, a nail file, a cuticle nipper, a cuticle trimmer, a cuticle pusher. It's also important to make sure your manicure tools are made out of the highest quality stainless steel.

Once you have your set, gently cut your nails after your shower. Go slowly and cut small pieces off at a time. Just like with haircuts, you can always take more off but you can't put more back. After trimming make sure to file them as well.

Gentleman, over the course of one year how long do you think you spend in the shower? Let's say you take one shower a day for around the average of 8 minutes.

After a little simple math, this adds up to 60 hours spent in the shower in one year! That is around 2 1/2 days…

So other than cleaning your body what are you going to do in the shower?

Listen to audiobooks.

In today society, it is hard to find time to read. I get it. With meetings and work and kids and girlfriends and wives and cooking and exercising, it is nearly impossible for some to find the time to read.

This is the perfect opportunity. Instead of spending your time in the shower mindlessly listening to the new Billie Ellish hit or day-dreaming, use this time to expand your knowledge!

According to Audible, the average length of an audiobook is around 10 hours.

In theory, you could “read” around 6 books in a year without even trying when listening to them in during your shower everyday.

You could probably listen to even more if you continue to listen to audiobooks during the rest of your morning/evening routine in the bathroom.

When is the last time you have been able to read 6 books without even trying? Get to it gentleman – your mind is desperately hungry for knowledge.

Let's go over fragrance anatomy before we delve in. You've probably heard of top notes, heart notes, and base notes…

But what do those terms mean?

Top notes consist of the lightest molecules. This where you are likely to find citrus scents like bergamot. They form the fragrance's initial impression and evaporate within 15 minutes.

Heart notes, or middle notes, form the core of the fragrance. They start to emerge as the top notes dissipate. Notes found here are more “rounded” – such as lavender and rose.

Base notes are the foundation of a fragrance. These are the densest molecules that take the longest to evaporate. This is where you commonly find musk, oakmoss, and leather.

Santal is an oriental fragrance packed with Indian sandalwood. After applying this fragrance, I was so struck that I looked up reviews to ensure I wasn't the only one. Sure enough, I wasn't. This fragrance for men is a guaranteed compliment-getter. It's underused, underrated, but well worth the cost.

 

Fall Fragrance #8. Royal Oud – Creed

• Top Notes: Lemon, Pink Pepper, Sicilian Bergamot
• Heart Notes: Cedar, Galbanum, Angelica
• Base Notes: Oud, Sandalwood, Musk

Creed formulated this scent in 2011 in response to numerous requests for an oud fragrance for men. Their inspiration? the vision of a Persian palace. It's a Fougere fragrance. This is a well-rounded fragrance for men where the cedar and sandalwood come through strongly.

 

Fall Fragrance #9. Tabarome Millésime – Creed

This is a long-lasting fragrance. I've worn it from one morning to the next, and I'm not the only one. What sets this fragrance for men apart is the almond scent which dominates the heart. This is a great aromatic fragrance for the fall.

Everyone thinks they have a great story. They have unique experiences that left them unique insights – and they're dying to tell you. This question invites them to indulge in themselves a bit by telling you some tales. `

The more you let somebody speak about themselves, the more they'll like you for it. All you have to do is listen carefully.

 

Starter #10. What Did You Do Last Weekend?

A very safe and shallow question is to ask how their weekend went. You can learn more about what they do in their free time. It's an opportunity to learn about the hobbies they pursue outside of work.

 

Starter #11. Do You Believe In Aliens?

Ok, I admit this is a curveball, but hear me out. This conversation starter question throws ANYBODY off. I like to use it in job interviews for that reason. It also hearkens back to childhood memories, when all of us had that sense of wonder and discovery.

You might even find out something interesting about the person. Perhaps they hold a strong belief in aliens after all!

 

Starter #12. How Is Your Week Going?

Another simple, easy question. They might tell you about having an amazing work week – packed with promotions, raises, and new experiences. On the other hand, this may open the flood gates to something deep. The person might be struggling with professional and personal challenges – this may push them to vent.

 

Starter #13. What's One Thing You Miss From Childhood?

This goes back to question 11 – that age of curiosity and discovery in everyone's childhood. They are bound to have memories they want to start over. It could be a friend they had that they lost touch with or grandparents that aren't around anymore.

You never know! Personally? I'd give anything to go back!

 

Starter #14. What's Your Favorite Restaurant Around Here?

This is a simple way to get a taste (get it?) of the other person's culinary inclinations. You can easily deduce whether they love a hearty steak or prefer Japanese cuisine. Our diet impacts us severely, so this is an essential piece of information!

 

Starter #15. Who Is Your Role Model?

People emulate their role models – making this an important question. If a man admires Harvey Specter from Suits, you might assume he strives to be as suave and well-dressed as the famous TV lawyer.

It's not always about celebrities, though. They can just as easily want to emulate a mom or a dad, meaning they put family high on the pedestal – that's good!

Steps For Starting A Business From Scratch

1. Burn your boats

1. Starting Your Business From Scratch – Burn Your Boats

To burn your boats is to acknowledge that there's no going back.

The phrase dates back to 711AD when Muslim general Tariq bin Ziyad landed in Gibraltar and invaded the Visigothic Kingdom of Spain.

He ordered his ships burned upon arrival, driving it into his troops that they could not go back.

The only way was forward.

Hernan Cortes did the same thing in 1519.

Once he got to Mexico, he his scuttled ships and told his troops that they would either conquer or die. He went on to conquer the Aztec Empire.

Notice a trend? These men said “screw it,” conquered everything in their path at any cost, and are remembered for it.

You need to cultivate the Burn The Ships mentality. Starting your business from scratch requires a sacred effort and resolute determination. This might mean you sleep in your truck, eat oatmeal every day, and stay single for a while.

Keep yourself laser-focused. The hardship will be worth it.

 

2. Starting Your Business Over Again? Face Reality

Ostriches plunge their heads into the ground when they feel threatened or overwhelmed.

If you failed in one business, you might be terrified to try again.

Your mind narrows solely on your failures.

You look for distractions wherever you can find them to take your mind off the challenge.

6 steps for starting a business from scratch:

1. Accept your current situation – denial leads to anxiety and chronic physical pain.
2. Acknowledge your problem – come out of denial.
3. Face the consequences – accept your role in how you got here and how you can learn from it.
4. Identify specific goals for starting your business – what do you want to gain out of it?
5. Focus on factors you can control.
6. Make a comprehensive plan in order to achieve your goals.

Be honest with yourself and where you want to be.

 

3. Starting Over? Give Yourself A Runway

A plane requires a runway to take off. The faster that air passes over the plane's wings, the less air pressure there is. This gives the plane lift it needs to takeoff.

The longer the runway, the more time the plane has to pick up speed.

You need to give yourself a long runway – time and space to breathe, make decisions – and act on them.

Let's go over two ways to achieve this.

1. Give Yourself Time To Breathe – Manage Your Money

Ruthlessly cut your expenses.

When I started my business, I sold everything I didn't need to survive. This included my motorcycle, my TV, any camera equipment (excluding video cameras).

I ate bare-bones meals. I used this cash to pay off my MBA and give me breathing space.

It's simple: The more money you have in your pocket, the more wiggle room there is for your business.

2. Give Yourself Time To Breathe – Manage Your Time

Guard your time at all costs.

The first step toward this is securing a space to work uninterrupted. Your beautiful wife and kids are distractions you don't need while you hustle.

Your basement, a park bench, truck stops at 4 AM. These are all solid options for a tranquil work environment.

Know how you spend your time. Analyze which tasks steal most of your time and eliminate them. Set deadlines to ensure you complete the most critical objectives on time.

Remember to focus on one thing at a time – you won't get anything done by multitasking on several projects.

 

4. Steps For Starting Your Business – Save Your Energy

We all have different rhythms.

Some of us are night owls while others shut down in the evening. The first step is to identify the time where you have the most energy and hone in on that.

Know your limits. If you experience a slump every day after lunch, powering through that will do more harm than good. Do some physical activities such as stretching during the slump. You could even power nap for 20 minutes.

Integrate high-energy foods with your diet. Sweet potatoes, green tea, nuts, and spinach are ideal for this.

Stave off burnout by working in high-intensity intervals with regular breaks.

Gamify your energy by focusing for 20-30 minutes, then reward yourself with a 10-minute break.

If you're starting your business from scratch, your goal should be to devote a minimum of 6-7 hours to your business each day.

The more quality work you can get done in that time, the better.

 

5. Before You Start – Beware of Misinformation

Only 25% of businesses last over a decade. The odds are against you – knowledge is your best friend.

While we're on the topic of honesty – you don't know everything.

You might be an expert when it comes to landscaping but you might not have a clue how to run a website.

One of the most important steps for starting a business is to be very careful about where you get your information from.

Your best friend may be supportive, but does he have experience in business management?

Don't hesitate to pay money to find the right coach, mentor, or community in your industry. The expert advice you are likely to find is well worth the money.

There are countless memberships you can attain in order to get a better industry or business insights. It could be as easy as searching on Facebook and joining the relevant group.

 

6. Starting Your Business From Scratch? Sell, Sell, Sell!

Forget business cards. If you're starting your business from scratch, you need to focus on getting your first deposit.

Putting money in the bank extends the runway we were talking about.

Your service needs to solve a bleeding neck problem.

What does this mean? When your neck is slashed, you don't consider the quality of the beds at nearby hospitals – you just rush to the nearest one.

How do you identify a need in the market? Here are some examples.

• Find your target audience.
• Discover peculiarities in your audiences' buying habits.
• Identify what customers like and hate about existing products.

People are more than willing to put money down if it means somebody will solve their gravest problems.

 

7. Starting Over From Scratch – Evaluate & Adjust

You've made your first sales. Your business is stable, and you have the breathing space to go back and review your strategy.

Let's say that you made 10 sales. Go back to that list and identify which were the most profitable.

What was unique about that product or service that got people paying more?

Adjust your target audience based on that data.

We often console ourselves with “staying busy” but that's not enough. This is the time to bring in the tenets of Essentialism, my favorite book on time management.

To eliminate the nonessential is to stop doing things that don't contribute significantly to your company.

Feeling overwhelmed after cutting the fat?

Consider hiring your first employee to help with customer service issues while you handle the big picture.

Take care with this step, though – employees can be a considerable expense when you're starting your business over from scratch.

Be certain that you can't do this on your own anymore.

Starting over from scratch isn't easy. I've been there and I got through it – and I know you can too.

Follow the steps in this article and remember, from darkness there comes light. Learn from your mistakes and come out the other end stronger and more successful than ever before.
