I shed a tear and feel for Italy and Spain as they have been locked up longer than me due to the coronavirus lockdown. We are not allowed outside at all. Our only outing is at the local supermarket, one family member only.  In the last 25 days, I often cry for the lives lost, but also for the economy. Our government’s actions have changed our lives forever. We have crossed the Rubicon river and there is no turning back. Our lives will never be the same again. I also dream of the so many amazing hotels I reviewed over the years. It keeps me sane and is my refuge during this serial part of my life. Economically with are the Titanic, sinking fast.

When will I be allowed outside? I have just been told, indefinitely meaning they really don’t know. Regarding my job. When will I review another hotel for 2020? 

Hotel Closures/Job Losses

Since 2015 I have been reviewing luxury hotels across the globe, around 260 to be exact. It is a job I learned and created myself. I carved a very niche way of reviewing hotels. I met amazing hosts along the way. On some occasions made good long-lasting friendships. I loved turning up and experiencing different ambiance, locations, and unknown adventures along the way.

One of my favourite part was people messaging me, stating they booked a stay thanks to my review.

The whole point of my job is that people booked a stay. So it keeps people in their workplace.

I knew coronavirus, was going to affect my work. I understood that and overnight I was jobless.

If you have lost your job I know that fear, numb feeling and shock you are going through.

It is heartbreaking to get e-mails constantly from luxury hotels around the globe, explaining they are no longer open. I feel their economical pain and uncertainty. I also empathise for those who want to book a luxury hotel later and can’t.

For the last few days I can’t fathom the economic suicide we are experiencing regarding the hotel sector and travel as a whole.  I also ponder with a heavy heart which hotels will survive this? How many people will be jobless?  Who will be around as a luxury hotel that I know?

As new bookings fell off a cliff and cancellations came flooding in, Max Walker-Williams, the founder and director of family-run boutique hotel group Walker & Williams, was forced to act quickly to preserve jobs and save the business.

Social Distancing

How on earth can anyone meet these criteria in the hotel sector? I have been banging my head against a brick wall regarding future bookings and stays. The current social distancing rule is 2 meters and some say 4 meters. When I am staying at a hotel I also experience the restaurant which is normally 80% booked and on some occasions holding at least 40 people in one room. If the rule is anything to go by on average there will be only 10 people in a room. From past experiences, boutique hotels are much smaller. The restaurant may close altogether. Part of the luxury stay in a hotel is eating and drinking at the bar.

The bar is such a fabulous place to meet new people. Engage with new business opportunities and also try some new trending drinks. Where am I going to get my cocktail now? What is going to be my hotel social outlet?

I have plenty of time to come up with a strategy working with hotels on this. Where there is a will, there will be a way.

Call To Action – The Big Ask

When hotels will be open for business is anyone guesses. When people like me are bold enough to book a trip is also the billion-pound economic challenge. For those who can afford it what can we all do to help? There is always our favorite hotel that we all like to return too. So I suggest you won’t and can’t travel out of your country let alone too far from home. Keep your stay as local as possible. The reason for this is more so than ever, after coming out of lockdown, you will be hearing stories that one could not even dream of. I know when I come out of this difficult stage of being cooped up inside, I will never be the same person again, none of us will.

Remember my dear friends, we are writing and living history like never before,

Don’t book too far in advance, because the medical experts are warning that lockdown will be seasonal, unknown and part of our lives until we find a cure or antiviral. 

In the past, I had a passion to do my job well. I adored meeting the owners, managers, and staff all around the globe. Hotels are always about the community.

Now my mission is to keep this industry afloat. So when I and you have the chance to book a stay. Your booking is not only about you. Your choice of a hotel stay is about feeding other families, supporting local industries.

I have learned so far that this pandemic has made me realise how small the world has become. More so than ever a luxury hotel stay is like being home away from home. We are all fighting the good unknown fight.

New car sales plummet but electric cars buck the trend

 

• In March 2020, 197% more electric cars were sold compared to March 2019.

• An electric car would still take more than four years to pay for itself without the Plug-in Car Grant.

• But electric motorists could pay for the government’s hospital building programme twice over with the money they’ve all saved on running costs.

New Car Sales For March

New car sales for March were down 44% on last year, due to the impact of Covid-19, but sales of new electric cars specifically swelled by an astonishing 197%.

This is despite the fact that it could take more than four years to pay off the price difference compared to the equivalent petrol model when the £3,000 government Plug-in Car Grant ends.

The government slashed a further £500 off the grant for buyers of new electric cars in the March budget, prompting speculation on when it will disappear entirely. 

Reaserach by car specialist AMT suggests that, aside from the environmental considerations of switching away from fossil fuels to power cars, the dramatic reduction in running costs for EVs appears to be the primary draw.

By the end of 2019, there were 237,850 purely electric cars on the UK’s roads. Collectively over 12 months, AMT estimates they saved £199,794,000 – enough to pay for the government’s hospital building commitment from September twice over.

Electric

That year saw 37,850 new electric cars registered – a rise of 144% on 2018. However, the increase in major cities is much greater.

London remains the most popular city for electric cars, with 3,308 being bought there in 2019, encouraged by schemes like the Congestion Charge and Ultra-Low Emission Zone.

Outside of the capital, Birmingham is embracing the fully electric car faster than anywhere else in the UK. Despite having a population less than seven times the size and no restriction zones for private cars, drivers there bought 2,312 in 2019 – a 517% increase in EV registrations from 2018.

That means Birmingham is the city experiencing the fastest expansion of electric car ownership in the UK.

In terms of outright number of EVs bought last year, Birmingham is followed by Leeds with 674 registrations.

AMT compared the purchase and running costs of two equivalent models – the most basic petrol-powered BMW 3 Series (a 318i) and an electric BMW i3:

Plug-in Car Grant Ending

If EV prices remain the same when the £3,000 Plug-in Car Grant does eventually end, it would take almost four-and-a-half years to offset the price difference with the cheaper running costs – longer than many owners keep a new car.

Ian Wright, general manager of AMT, said: “This soaring popularity of electric cars is happening only after years of pondering by carmakers and successive governments. Yes, the environmental factors are weighing heavier on drivers’ consciences, but I believe it’s largely down to a sudden and huge boost in the choice of EVs.

“Not very long ago, electric cars were still a bit of a joke, designed to appeal only to specific enthusiasts. Now, most mainstream manufacturers either offer a purely electric version of an existing model or are developing one – driven by the looming 2035 ban on petrol and diesel cars.

“The advances in the charging network for EVs over even just the past couple of years have also played a huge part. Regardless of how many miles of range a car has, people want the reassurance of knowing that they will be able to charge up at short notice should they need to. That’s only just becoming realistically possible.”

The campaign asks the fantastic UK community to ditch their razors to become ‘Sprouters’ for charity.

The World Grows Wild Campaign is supporting the National Emergencies Trust (NET) Coronavirus Appeal, launched by the Duke of Cambridge on 18^th March 2020 to distribute raised funds fairly and efficiently alongside trusted community foundations and local charities ensuring vital support gets to the individuals and organisations that need it most.

The World Grows Wild Campaign is gender-neutral, targeting women, men, old and young and everyone in between – to let their hair grow wild, wherever it may sprout!

The campaign is aimed at the already growing hirsute proportions of the population who are in lock-down, in a bid to raise a staggering £2,000,000 of funds to support National Emergencies Trust’s Coronavirus Appeal.

Epidiolex is the first CBD-based drug to be approved by the FDA for general use in helping to manage seizures and lessen their impact.

In a study published on the NCBI’s website, the use of CBD in patients with generalized anxiety was shown to be effective at both reducing anxiety-induced behavior patterns and the levels of anxiety that patients experienced. 

Not only did this study show CBD’s effectiveness in treating anxiety disorders, but it also demonstrated the compound’s excellent safety profile. 

CBD generally has few to no side-effects, which makes it ultimately safer to use than many prescription anti-depressants and anti-anxiety medications. 

4. Reducing Blood Pressure/Heart Health 

One of the most exciting benefits of CBD is its ability to help reduce blood pressure and improve heart health. Researchers have found through a randomized crossover study that CBD actually acts as a vasodilator, which means it helps dilate blood vessels to allow proper blood flow to and from the heart and to major organs/bodily systems.

Half of the 20 Premier League sides taking part in the 2019-20 season went into the season with a gambling sponsor after signing deals worth a combined £69 million. Malta-based Betway was found to be the biggest contributor via its £10 million deal with West Ham United.

Incredibly, just three Premier League sides began this season without partnering a betting brand: Brighton & Hove Albion, Sheffield United and Southampton FC. Top-half sides such as the two Manchester clubs, Liverpool and Arsenal also sport official partnerships with betting brands off the pitch.

For Leicester City and Newcastle United, betting is at the heart of their clubs with the Foxes listing Bet365, Betway and W88.com as “valued club partners” and the Magpies entertaining Bet365 and MansionBet combined with Fun88 as its shirt sponsor.

Whilst the Premier League is undoubtedly the highest-profile, the rest of the English leagues are rife with betting branding too. Just seven Championship sides avoided entertaining betting companies as shirt sponsors before heading into the 2019-20 season.

Criticism and controversy

This has sparked a great deal of controversy in recent years with some criticising the advertisement of betting companies encouraging gambling and the issues that surround it. Even Irish betting brand Paddy Power used its space on both Huddersfield Town’s and Motherwell FC’s shirts in a bid to switch attention to the use of kits as “billboards” before the season began.

Others, like Premier League chief Richard Marsters, believe that football and gambling go hand-in-hand and that it is up to clubs themselves to police the potential problems.
