The New 007 Is Black British Actress Lashana Lynch

Bond. James Bond. As it turns out, the iconic British spy known as Agent 007 will soon be someone else. In the upcoming Bond 25 film starring Daniel Craig, the spy formerly known as 007 will be up-and-coming actress Lashana Lynch, who will play James Bond’s counterpart.

Don’t worry though, James Bond will remain a male for the foreseeable future. Writer Phoebe Waller-Bridge seeks to make a few distinctions more evident. “There’s been a lot of talk about whether or not Bond is relevant now because of who he is and the way he treats women. I think that’s bollocks. I think he’s absolutely relevant now,” Waller-Bridge told The Mail. “[The franchise] has just got to grow. It has just got to evolve, and the important thing is that the film treats the women properly. He doesn’t have to. He needs to be true to his character.”

In a somewhat recent trend in which supporters laud increased calls for diversity and critics condemn it in the entertainment industry, several iconic characters have been brought up to current times. For many people, the James Bond franchise should be no different.

Nevertheless, there is more to the story than a simple replacement of a traditionally male archetype with a more feminine character. The franchise appears to be growing up in other ways, as well. No longer will Bond girls be referred to as such, the diminutive being replaced by a more mature “Bond women.”

Sexy, smart, and as capable with a pistol as Ian Fleming's spy from the novels – it looks like Lashana Lynch's new character will make quite the impression in 2020. An unnamed source reportedly told the Daily Mail that her first scene will be one for filmgoers to remember for some time.

“There is a pivotal scene at the start of the film where M says, ‘Come in, 007,’ and in walks Lashana,” said the source. “It’s a popcorn-dropping moment. Bond is still Bond, but he’s been replaced as 007 by this stunning woman. Bond, of course, is sexually attracted to the new female 007 and tries his usual seduction tricks but is baffled when they don’t work on a brilliant, young black woman who basically rolls her eyes at him and has no interest in jumping into his bed. Well, certainly not at the beginning.”
