The Best AskMen guyQ Questions Ever (And Their Answers)

In 1999, AskMen was founded on the principle that men had questions in need of answering. In 2015, after 16 years of answering men’s questions through articles and videos, AskMen created a dedicated space for these questions — the AskMen guyQ platform

It’s open to people of all genders to ask questions to, for, from and about men on a variety of subjects. While sex and dating are often the most popular topics, things like style, grooming, fitness, food, news, culture and much more are also on the menu.

Guys from all different backgrounds come to guyQ to ask and answer questions from their various perspectives. Sometimes they agree on a single answer; often they provide various takes for the question asker to consider.

Regardless, it can make for some fascinating discussions about what it means to be a man and the right way to be a man, if there is one. In honor of that spirit, we’ve collected some of the best (and most popular) questions from guyQ’s history.

Disclaimer: These answers are not expert-approved. So take them with a grain of salt. But that being said… Here’s what guys had to say:

Girlfriend’s Sexual Past Bothers Me… What Do I Do?

The Question: “Okay, I’ve been with my girlfriend 5 months now, and everything is going great but the past few days her past has been bothering me. She is 21, and I’m the 8th guy she had sex with. She cried over this a few times and told me she regrets her past. A few months ago, she told me I was her 7th, which bothered me at the time. I got over it, then the other night, it got brought up, and she now told me I’m her 8th and she miscounted last time ... so I kept pushing it saying am I really your 8th or is it gonna go up again. So she was crying, saying she wishes I was her 1st.

This has really been bothering me because she had a bf for 2 years before me, he was her 7th (supposedly) which doesn’t bother me much because he was a long term bf. The other 6 bother me because they either weren’t boyfriends, or they were really short term relationships. She said she was a V until 18, then dated her last ex from 19-21 … so basically she has been through 6 guys in the year she was 18.

My relationship is going great with her and she has been very loyal to me, it’s just really been bothering me lately that why is she something special to me and someone I love, but just a good time for 6 other people in the past? Why wasn't she good enough to be something special for them? And it bothers me that she gave it up so easily in the past, and it especially bothers me because it makes me feel like maybe I’m not as special as I think.

She gets upset over it, and claims she was young and stupid and didn't know any better, and thought sex would make someone fall in love with you. But it just bothers me that she made the same mistake 6 times? And let me just say that she has way more sexual experience than me ... she is my first.

Advice please.” - Anonymous

Top Answer: “I am actually in the same boat, and I did end up losing her due to the amount of times I made her cry regarding the subject, but now we are back together and I realized the bigger picture and I wanna share it with you, hopefully it can help you.

It's best not to dwell on the past openly ... if you're gonna dwell at least do it alone and don't bring it up to her bc it seems like when you do bring it up to her, you make her cry.

I know it's not intentional, bc again I did the same thing. And believe me it still messes with me, I still think about it even almost a year later, but it doesn't get to any point where it can ruin us. I just kinda push the thought aside with reason and change in perspective. I put myself in her shoes and I know she regrets sleeping with the two previous guys. She only slept with them bc they promised her something just to get laid. It's them I am mad at and not her bc it's not her fault, she was young and made mistakes it happens. They are the ones that lied to a girl, and made false promises in order to get laid.

Listen man, you said she has told you she regrets it. You bringing it up and handling it the way you do only makes it worse for her. If you keep treating her that way, she will leave. It happened to me.

Just realize what you got such as I did. I love my girlfriend so much, and I hope you love yours. With that being said, don't let the negative thoughts take over your life or ruin a beautiful thing. You have that gold medal that the other 9 guys failed to get.

Hang in there, I understand your viewpoint 100 percent.” - Brandon

AskMen Take: Getting hung up on your partner’s sexual past is a dangerous slope that’s often tied to outdated and unhealthy notions of female sexual purity. No matter who you are or who you’re dating, you should try to love them for who they are with you. Who they were before you got together might make you feel uncomfortable for one reason or another, but if they’re not engaging in that behavior anymore and they can’t change what they’ve done, how does it benefit you to get emotional about it?

How a Skinny 15-Year-Old Can Gain Muscle Mass?

The Question: “Okay so I'm 15, skinny and I want to be able to properly fit my shirts. Just wanna get some muscle on me. Nothing too big. People say to eat big meals and eat a snack every hour or so, but I don't have the $ for that. I've been doing exercises like pushups, sit ups, etc. Things you can do at home, since there's no gym around where I live. Anybody have any advice?” - Anonymous

Top Answer: “Like kenmele mentioned, if you're still growing (and you probably are), there's only so much you can do until nature takes over and gives you the hormonal boosts you'll need. Also, there may be some health risks involved with heavy training while you're still in such an important growth phase. You'll probably be ok, but ask your doctor next time you go.

That said, if you want size and size alone, your best friends in the weightroom are going to be 1) isolation and 2) high repetitions. Compound exercises with heavy weights are ideal for increasing your body's strength, but you need to isolate individual muscle groups and fatigue them because that's when your body gets the signal to develop more mass in response to the load.

Pushups are good because you can do 1,000 of them and really get a good pump, but dumbbell flies are even better. Squats are good, but lunges are even more isolating. If it's your arms you're worried about, it's tough to beat cable kickbacks and old-fashioned bicep curls. Pullups are fine as long as you're skinny enough for them to be an endurance (as opposed to strength) exercise, and dumbbell and/or cable rows will also help build your back. More important than the exercises themselves is choosing weights that allow you to get into higher rep ranges (12-15 or so), where the last few are REALLY hard.

Like Kingslayer said, your school probably has some kind of a gym that's free for all students. And yeah, you gotta eat a lot. Since you're 15, it doesn't have to be exotic or even particularly high-quality food, just make sure it's a lot of calories.” - IanLang

AskMen Take: Ian’s answer is a good one — we should know; he used to write for us. That being said, one thing he doesn’t address is whether you really need all that muscle. Sure, getting in shape is a noble goal; a healthy body is a powerful component of an overall healthy life. But going after muscles in particular (especially at a relatively young age) could be a sign that you’re trying to overcompensate for a feeling of insecurity by bulking up physically — when you might be better off working on your state of mind. Talking to a therapist, psychologist or counselor about your fears, doubts and self-esteem issues will make you a lot more confident and comfortable than packing on 20 extra pounds of muscle.

Is 5’8” Considered a Short Height for Males These Days?

The Question: “Is 5'8 considered a short height for males these days? I always see girls mention in their preferences they want a guy that is at least 5'10. Isn't 5'9 average?

No bashing in this thread please. For instance when i look at myself in photos or in the mirror, i look a bit short. Yet how do woman who are like 5'4 may think a guy who's 5'8 be short? I mean since I am 5'8 and if i see a guy who is 5'11 he definitely looks tall.

I don't know. Do woman like 5'3 even look at a guy 5'7 5'8 and say they are short? I mean she's a good 4-5 inches shorter.” - Redline84

Top Answer: “cmon lads height dont matter even size dont its all deception im 5 ft 7 and i dropped people twice the size of me there u go i just debunked this masculine myth being taller dont mean shit id rather be 5 ft 7 and have the blinding speed that i have no plus 5 ft 7 at 19 aint short” - Boxer0121

AskMen Take: Read this article about male height immediately.

Do Men Like Anal Sex Over Vaginal Sex?

The Question: “Hey Guys,

I have a question for you that I've never understood. Do men like anal sex over vaginal sex? If so, why? What should I think if I've been dating a guy but have not slept with him yet, and he asked me if I've ever had anal sex? That means he wants it right?” - Anonymous

Top Answer: “He might be like me and like anal because his sensations are entirely different up your butt. He may also be turned-on because it's a little unusual, and some people don't do it. He my want stick his probe up every opening you have. That's me, for a woman that I am turned on to. Just imagine this baby, your vagina is bumpy, and has a row of ridges just inside and behind your pubic bone. The vag can actually grasp his penis.

Obviously it is designed to massage his glans until he cums. Men who like sex, DO NOT want to cum right away. The rectum is just the opposite. It feels different. It feels big inside and hotter than the vag,. Unless the man is hung like a porn star, he will won't hit the bottom, it just keeps on going. Only the anal canal is snug, and it is about 1 inch long, everything deeper feels big and open. His glans penis (his probe sensor that must be satisfied for ejaculation) is getting a tease. It feels a lot like oral sex when the woman just takes the dick up and down with little or no suction or tongue action on the dick head. You can suck like that forever and he won't cum.

Same thing up the anus, only more so. After about 5 min, the anal canal dilates quite a bit, in comparison to when you are starting. Just keep it slick with lube and it will become not so tight, but still snug around his shaft. His penis sensation , especially in his glans, will diminish so much he may need to thrust harder. More likely he will need to pull his glans almost all the way out on the back stroke for it to experience the snugness at the entrance. It might blow his mind as he dicks you doggy seeing his dick draped in butt cleavage. What he is feels and sees is different. You should let him try it, you will like it because you get a much different sensation as well. Since he is up your butt, it will feel like defecation at first. Women say that feeling fades in a few minutes, but does not go away entirely. They will tell you that sensation is great if you just concentrate and work your clit. Your anal orgasms will be more intense, and he can feel you orgasm when the muscles in your anus contracts around his penis.” - Dickerson

AskMen Take: As with almost any sex question, there’s no single answer that applies to all men. Some men definitely do prefer anal; some men would never dare (and some men like to receive rather than give!) Generally speaking, vaginal sex is more common, but if you’ll have to try it out for yourself if you want to know which you like better.

I Can’t Take the Head of My Penis Out of Its Skin When It’s Horny

The Question: “Not even when I masturbate. I only can take it when it's not horny. But why? I've tried many times to take the head of my penis when its horny but it hurt so much and I couldn't even take a move. So all the time I masturbate with the skin on it. But I can take the head out of its skin when its not horny but it struggles when I try to put it inside. But once I took it out of the skin when it's not horny and I made it horny but it hurt so much and I couldn't even move the skin cause it was so tight. And then I put it inside when it wasn't horny but the whole skin didn't cover the head that time. Like some of the skin has rolled it or something. Whys that? Is there any solution for this? How can I take it out when it's horny? What should I do?” - Dmiller

Top Answer: “You should see your doctor. You might have a condition called phimosis, but there are other possible causes, and you'll need a real doctor to work out what the problem is and give you some relief.” - Wilde

AskMen Take: Seeing a doctor about an issue relating to your private parts can be nerve-wracking, but Wilde is absolutely right. If you’re ever concerned that something’s up with your genitals, it’s better to be safe than sorry. Phimosis can often be dealt with without surgery, but you’re better off in the hands of an expert than trying to figure out things on your own.

Is It Okay to Be Naked in a Locker Room?

The Question: “Is it okay to be naked in a locker room?” - Anonymous

Top Answer: “To an extent. I think it's fine if you're naked while you're changing. If you're walking around naked all the time on the other hand, then no, please put a towel on.” - tkaravou

AskMen Take: It’s pretty hard to change in a locker room without ever being somewhat naked, but there are definitely amounts of naked you can be that might make other people somewhat uncomfortable. How long you’re naked for, how much you let other people see you — these are contextual questions that’ll depend on how many people are around, whether any of them are children, how comfortable you are with your own body, and so forth. It might be better to err on the side of caution, however, but if you’re spending your entire time in the locker room panicking about people seeing you naked, you can loosen up a little bit.

Are Men Supposed to Shave Pubic Hair or Just Let It Grow?

The Question: “Are men supposed to shave pubic hair? Or just let the hair grow? I don’t know if to shave or not” - Anonymous

Top Answer: “I shave my nuts. Because when they’re getting sucked, it feels better when they’re as smooth as eggs.

I do a bit of trimming too as to keep the bush to a minimum.” - Kingslayer

AskMen Take: Though shaving, waxing and trimming are more popular now than they used to be — perhaps in part due to the prevalence of hairless guys in internet porn, or an increase in comfort with various male grooming practices — there really isn’t any “supposed to” situation. You can definitely let yourself be influenced by your partner’s desires if they prefer more or less pubic hair, but at the end of the day, you should go with whatever feels best for you.
