Men Still Pay for the First Date, Says Study

One of the first things to pop into people’s minds while planning a first date is … who’s paying? For both men and women, this can be confusing and even stressful. But it turns out, while most men still believe they have to pay for the first date, most women don’t agree.

A new study by EliteSingles — one large enough in scope to have included a significant sample of 300,000 American adults — suggests that the more things change, the more they stay the same.

According to the results, men still expect to shoulder the financial cost of the first date — 62 percent of men surveyed said that the man should pay for the first date. Just two percent of men surveyed said that women should pay for the first date, seven percent suggested splitting the bill, and 28 percent “didn't mind” who was covering the bill.

Women's attitudes aren't significantly different in their composition, though the ratio is a bit different. Only about 46 percent of female respondents said that men should pay for the premiere romantic outing, while 18 percent suggested going Dutch. Exactly 31 percent of women polled replied that they had no feelings one way or another about the financial tally of the first night out, while just five percent of women suggested that their fellow ladies should foot the bill.

There are some regional differences too: Men from Alabama and Wyoming are more likely to want to get the check — perhaps displaying some traditional ideals — while guys from Washington D.C. have relatively cold feet when it comes time to pay.

We all know that the odds of getting lucky on the first date are rising with each passing year. In 2017, the Singles in America survey suggested that over one-third of all singles have had sex before (not during, or after) a first date. Beyond that, nearly half of all millennials said the same.

Which might just be an indication that people care more these days about having a great date than who’s paying for it.
