Fun Fall Activities to Do With a Partner That Have Zero to Do With Apple Picking

It’s fall, which means couples everywhere are stampeding to their nearest orchard, primed to flood the social media feeds of friends and family alike with apple-related pictures.

Any two people who have been a few dates when apple picking season hits are faced with a conundrum: Get all cozy and go pull apples off trees together, all while posing for what could be mistaken as wedding photos, or pretend like fall doesn’t exist altogether?

Deciding to go as a couple is almost as big of a commitment as moving in together.

Basically, apple picking is serious business, but that doesn’t mean you should worry. If you’re still hoping to get fall festive without heading to the orchard with your partner, there are plenty of other things you can do this fall season that are equally as enjoyable — but not as expected.

1. Go Pumpkin Picking Instead

Show off your brute strength with a trip to a pumpkin patch. Pumpkins are larger and heavier, making it more of an extreme outing than apple picking. If big, orange gourds aren’t your thing, there are other fruits you can pick, too. Depending on where you live something like strawberries or raspberries might even still be in season. And worst case, you can just drink all the pumpkin-flavored beer you want.

2. Go to a Giant Corn Maze

Head to a farm, go straight past the apples and get lost in a corn maze. Disorient yourself to the point of fear and anxiety instead of just picking things off trees. If your partner gets scared, just remember to hold ‘em close and pretend like you’re not just as terrified as they are.

3. Make Your Own Couples Costumes

Fall means getting cozy, but as we get into September, it also means getting spooky, too. Get into the spirit of Halloween with a really good couple’s costume. Instead of opting for some janky, overly expensive outfit from Party City, take some time, plan it out and make the 31st your new favorite holiday.

4. Take a Hike

Autumn is the perfect season for hiking. The falling leaves and crisp, breezy air makes it not so hot as to avoid sweating, and not so cold to keep you from freezing. Use the stroll as an opportunity to chat and get to know each other on a deeper level. Post-hike, you two can head home and cozy up in bed (or take a shower together … either works).

5. Tailgate

You don’t have to love football to love hanging around cars as an excuse to eat hot dogs and drink beer. Liking football helps, though.

6. Go to a Haunted House

If you haven’t been, you might be surprised at just how all out some of these places go. Whether it’s a scary mansion, abandoned hospital or dark hay maze, you don’t need to be near a professional amusement park to get the sh*t scared out of you.

7. Go on a Hayride

A scenic and relaxing option ... unless it veers off towards the aforementioned haunted house.

8. Have a Bonfire Night

There’s nothing better than building a bonfire and enjoying that crisp night air. Whether on a beach or snuggled near a fire pit in someone’s backyard, enjoy the night by cuddling under a blanket after inhaling an unhealthy amount of s’mores. Before you know it, everything will be covered in snow.

9. Head to a Drive-In Movie Theater

Believe it or not, these still exist! While the nearest one could be hours away, a little road trip will only add to the outing. If you’re looking to hit your partner with a bit of nostalgia, early autumn is the perfect time to sit in your car with the windows down in an open lot with an old timey movie playing on the screen.

10. Check Out Your Local Fairs

And when in doubt, head to a fair. Fall weather and farmers’ markets go hand-in-hand, so whether you’re going with your partner to stroll around or shop for food that’ll make for a great dinner dish, it’s a great autumn event you two can enjoy together. Not to mention, there will probably be plenty of Oktoberfest-themed fairs, too, which means solid food and drink options that will be hard to pass up.
