A Million Little Things Star David Giuntoli Talks Having a Peter Pan Complex and the Last Thing That Made Him Cry

David Giuntoli went from a dark and fantastical world of mythical creatures on “Grimm” to one where the only demons he’s tasked with slaying are his internal ones.

As Eddie Saville on ABC’s “A Million Little Things,” Giuntoli has stepped into the role of a struggling alcoholic, on the mend over the last decade but still looking for the best way to live a straight and narrow life in all respects. It certainly doesn’t help that his character is in love with his best friend’s wife … and that his best friend kicks off the series with an untimely suicide that shakes Saville, and the rest of his close-knit group of guy friends, to their core.

When comparing himself to Saville, Giuntoli acknowledges that they are very much two different people.

“Eddie was the frontman of a middling band in his twenties and early thirties,” says Giuntoli, “and with that came a lot of adulation … he was the life of the party and everybody loved him. He was fun when he drank, and there is a boredom to sobriety. I'm not a sober person, and I don't have a drinking problem, but there is a lifestyle that I gave up which was more of a party lifestyle, and you just can't live like that forever.”

As for what they share in common? Well, their undying love and affection for their children … and having all eyes on them, of course. Because who doesn’t enjoy the spotlight every once in a while?

“I'm a new dad. I couldn't be happier. I'm married to a wonderful woman, and I'm an actor who loves all of the attention on me,” jokes Giuntoli. “Eddie and David share their love for attention, and they are begrudgingly giving it up to be responsible dads and adults. I think Eddie and me both have a little bit of a pathetic Peter Pan complex, too.”

Leaving the life as a Grimm on set might’ve been relatively easy, but there’s a different weight — one of guilt, pain and suffering — that’s much heavier to carry around as Eddie. According to Giuntoli, when he goes into hair and makeup, he says he tries to “wipe as much of that off of my face as possible before I go home to my wife and child.”

By now, you might be wondering what sets “A Million Little Things” apart from similar programming out now (or “cry porn,” as Giuntoli refers to ‘em), and it’s the show’s ability to treat people like the grown-ups they are. The series is authentic, it respects its audience and there’s a healing aspect that the viewers respond well to.

As for those viewers? Well, despite what you may think, it’s not just ladies in their pajamas sitting around with a bottle of Pinot. Plenty of gents watch, too, and if you’re not already into this show, you damn well should be.

“I think a lot of times the trope would be guys sit right next to each other, drink beers, they go to bars or to sporting events, but they really don't know anything about each other. That is something we deal with explicitly in the pilot episode, and it really struck a chord with men who approached me,” says Giuntoli. “A lot of them watch it with their girlfriends or wives, but they are completely into it and it is a kind of a healing thing for them.”

His portrayal of Eddie isn’t the only one that resonates with those guys sitting at home every Thursday night.

“I think the character of Rome (Romany Malco) was really important for the black male audience who deal with depression, which is a little bit more taboo, so I hear in that culture,” he adds. “And Gary (James Roday) going through breast cancer… I mean these are not typically male struggles. And of course, they are, [but] we just don't get to see it all the time.”

With all the tears shed on “A Million Little Things,” you would think that the cast’s ducts would be dried up by the time they head home, but Giuntoli still remembers the last time he cried not reading an episode: the birth of his daughter.

“[My wife] was trying to do it naturally and finally, I mean she was so exhausted, she was shaking,” he says. “They had to do an emergency C-section, and when I saw the baby come out, I didn't cry because of how beautiful it was to see my daughter, I burst into tears for three short seconds, like a micro storm, because I was relieved for my wife that finally this ordeal is over. I cried out of relief.”

For those who don’t know, Giuntoli’s wife is none other than his former “Grimm” co-star, Elizabeth “Bitsie” Tulloch. If the name rings a bell, it’s because she’s currently living her best superhero life as Lois Lane in the CW’s expansive Arrowverse. While it’s not Giuntoli sweeping her off her feet as the legendary Superman, ironically enough, he did audition for the role back when Henry Cavill was cast in 2013.

“I got fairly close,” he states. “Not incredibly close, but my name was out there for it, and they saw me a bunch.” And while Giuntoli isn’t rocking an S on his chest, he reveals that he’ll be rocking a different emblem in the near future – one of the animated sorts, that is.

“I actually just voiced Batman in this new animated Batman movie that'll be coming out in a couple years,” he says. “I don't think everybody knows that yet. There's a dignity to voiceover acting. You can age gracefully, and still be the hero.”
