Pierce Brosnan Says the Next James Bond Should Be Female

After taking four turns as the iconic secret agent himself, actor Pierce Brosnan has a bit of advice for Hollywood when casting the next James Bond: "Get out of the way, guys."

“I think we’ve watched the guys do it for the last 40 years," he continued in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. "Put a woman up there. I think it would be exhilarating, it would be exciting.”

Though Brosnan may be all for women's equality when it comes to the Bond role, he cautions that audiences probably shouldn’t get their hopes up, at least not while the films are still being produced by Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli.

“I don’t think that’s going to happen with the Broccolis,” Brosnan noted. “I don’t think that is going to happen under their watch.”

Broccoli actually spoke to The Guardian in 2018 to quell any heated rumors of a gender switch for the lead role:

“Bond is male,” she said. “He’s a male character. He was written as a male and I think he’ll probably stay as a male. And that’s fine. We don’t have to turn male characters into women. Let’s just create more female characters and make the story fit those female characters.”

As it turns out, audiences won't have to wait very long for these new female characters to arrive. “No Time to Die,” the 25th installment in the Bond franchise, will see the up-and-coming actress Lashana Lynch take on the 007 moniker. But don’t worry, Daniel Craig will continue his reign as James Bond, the man himself, for the fifth — but likely final — time. The film is set for an April 2020 release.

Since the role will remain male for the foreseeable future, Brosnan shared whether or not he thinks the franchise should get the #MeToo treatment:

“Without question, yes ... The #MeToo movement has been relevant and significant and well needed in our society, so they’ll have to address that.”

As for Brosnan's next role, he is currently filming a Netflix comedy about the “Eurovision Song Contest” alongside Will Ferrell and Rachel McAdams.
