1 in 4 People Have Sexual Thoughts About Cartoon Characters, Says Study

Coming from the category of perhaps unsurprising news items, a survey of 4,000 Americans suggests that a large percentage of people have fantasized about having sex with a cartoon character.

Sure, this may sound absurd at first, but it actually makes sense when you do a deeper dive. Remember Jessica Rabbit of Who Framed Roger Rabbit? How about the kinky and lovable Lois from Family Guy — or her counterpart on comedy classic American Dad, Francine?

And that's just a sampling of the sexy cartoon ladies listed as being the hottest thing ever drawn by human hands. As it turns out, having erotic daydreams (or sensual dreams writ large) about animated characters isn't uncommon at all. According to sex psychologist Dr. Justin Lehmiller of the Kinsey Institute, this particular kink is just one of many different shades of natural human sexuality.

“One way to look at sci-fi fantasies is as a simple manifestation of human beings’ broad need for sexual novelty,” he said.

Grouping together fetishes over cartoon or anime characters with fantasies of getting busy with a being from another planet, Lehmiller points out that these “sci-fi fantasies” are totally natural and nothing to necessarily be ashamed of or freaked out about.

As the sex psychologist indicates, over half of his study group admitted to having had a steamy dream about a fictional character from a movie or a book, about a third raised their hand when asked if they had ever desired sex with a supernatural creature such as a werewolf or vampire, and a notable 1 in 6 respondents said that they had a thing for aliens.

“Another way to explain the popularity of sci-fi fantasies is that a lot of us just have active imaginations. There’s something called a fantasy-prone personality, which involves being a very active daydreamer,” Dr. Lehmiller said. “I found that people who scored high on this personality trait reported more sexual fantasies about almost everything, including science fiction scenarios. So in other words, these fantasies are sometimes nothing more than just the product of a wandering mind.”

So — don't feel too dirty if you've gotten hot and heavy with the mental image of Scooby-Doo's Daphne in mind. It's totally normal, at least according to this study.

Following in the footsteps of popular porn fads such as Pokemon porn and Fortnite porn, a fixation with having sex with fictional people or personalities seems a bit conservative by comparison. Whether or not we're about to see a pornographic or sexual renaissance related to these widespread fantasies remains unclear, as yet, but it is certainly comforting to know that those who do indulge in these sorts of sci-fi fantasies are not alone.
