Tinder Set to Launch First Choose-Your-Own-Adventure Video Series

While Tinder might be the hottest property in a totally saturated dating app marketplace, it seems that they’re not afraid to maintain their position by adding a little bit of novelty. Whether it’s a new feature, funky badges or themed matchmaking practices, the company is always on the move. Its new adventure, however, is probably not something anyone in the dating world might have expected.

Now, Tinder is asking their users to imagine the end of the world. Apocalyptic scenarios may be the stuff of corny sci-fi movies but apparently, they’re also providing plenty of fodder for potential romance.

According to Reuters, through Tinder’s first scripted content ever produced, the dating app hopes to lead Romeos and Juliets through a lengthy choose your own adventure role-playing game. Tinged with a decidedly dark edge (remember, we’re talking about the apocalypse) Tinder users trek through an episodic story in which they decide what to do when facing important decisions. There are reportedly six episodes to the entire campaign, and the entire experience lasts about 20 minutes.

The episodes, which mirror an interactive television format popularized by “Black Mirror: Bandersnatch” on Netflix earlier this year, were filmed in August, in Mexico City. Tinder users who go on this depressing journey may find their spirits lifted by the fact that it's more than just a form of entertainment: if they want to, they can also hook up with fellow survivors who selected the same options that they did. This rough compatibility test seems common enough in traditional video games, but in this instance, the players are all human and are all, presumably, also looking for love.

This bold move mirrors a rise in parent company Match's stock, and user base. The company responsible for guiding Tinder through the current dating marketplace has seen an influx of new subscribers, and their stock price has soared by more than 75 percent over the past year in response.

Borrowing heavily from the young adult fantasy books which allowed readers to play against a variety of fictional creatures, scenarios and challenges between the pages, it looks like Tinder is resurrecting an old idea, repurposing it into something new and fresh. While in the 1980s and 1990s this sort of geeky material might have been considered the furthest thing from fashionable, “nerd culture” has opened new doors for creative, intelligent content like this latest move by Tinder.

It looks like Match is attempting to turn Tinder into something more than a run-of-the-mill meat market. The concept of playing a dating game involving a destroyed world might be, at least, a little more fun, especially if you’re looking for someone compatible to survive the apocalypse.
