The Glenlivet Launches Cocktail Capsules of Scotch Whisky

Although a lot of people are saying they look like Tide Pods, The Glenlivet’s newest Cocktail Capsules might be the perfect glassless and iceless sip of whisky.

In a new trailer for their new “cocktail capsules” collection, the narrator explains The Glenlivet's latest product offering.

The Glenlivet has released an original whisky drinking experience. A collection of edible cocktail capsules made from seaweed, meaning no need for a glass, ice, or a cocktail stirrer. Tayer — one of the world's best bars — created three new Founder's Reserve-based recipes for whisky lovers to try together. To enjoy them, pop the capsule in your mouth, and take a bit to release the delicious cocktail ingredients. The Glenlivet is the first spirit brand in the world to team up with sustainable packing startup, Notpla, who developed the capsule technology. The Glenlivet capsule collection sets new standards for how whisky can be enjoyed.”

There's a lot to digest here, and the first is the very existence of a Scotch cocktail in a seaweed wrap. Seemingly borrowing from molecular mixology and the experimental cocktail experiences common to the practice The Glenlivet seems to be taking a pretty bold and fun step, contrary to the staid, conservative tradition a lot of fans might associate with premium Scotch.

It's as yet unclear whether the seaweed-based membrane containing the three different cocktails will impart any salty or sour flavors, but if so, the new capsules might be even more appealing.

The capsule collection coming from one of the biggest Scotch brands on the planet seems to be a controversial move, however, with Scotch fans on social media appearing to be a little shocked and confused by the news.

Tweets range from “END THIS CAMPAIGN NOW” to “How do you say no in Scottish?” to “Yes! An easy way to sneak liquor into concerts.”

Unfortunately for whisky lovers the world over, The Glenlivet capsule collection will only see an extremely limited release. Those looking to sample the seaweed and Scotch combo will have to get themselves to London's Tayer + Elementary before October 13, where the capsules will be available.
