Will Smith Has a Fresh Prince of Bel-Air Spin-Off in the Works

Now this is a story all about how the internet got flip-turned upside down. Rumors of a “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” spin-off have started to emerge, and it's driving fans of the 1990s sitcom nuts with nostalgia.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Smith is ready to take on the legacy project that people have clamored after for many, many years.

When we last left off with the Banks family, they were selling their Bel-Air mansion after Hilary's talk show relocates to the Big Apple. Cousin Will is sort of left in the lurch after all of the Banks kids discuss their hopes and dreams in the city. With Carlton headed to Princeton and Ashley was set to attend a performing arts school, there’s no telling where things would pick up if a spin-off is brought to television screens. 

Details surrounding the reboot are so far pretty scarce, but early indications suggest that the project is being produced by Westbrook media, a diverse holding company owned by Smith and wife Jada Pinkett Smith.

Just years ago, prior to the release of 2016's “Suicide Squad,” Smith had previously dispelled rumors of a potential “Fresh Prince” reboot, telling E! News that it would never happen. “I don’t think ever — like, pretty close to when Hell freezes over. Pretty close, like, we’re gonna leave that one alone,” he said.

Alfonso Ribeiro, the actor who played Carlton Banks, was equally critical about any idea of bringing the show back from the dead in remarks made to HuffPost Live.

“If it happened, it wouldn’t be Fresh Prince. It would be something that’s taking the story of the show and having all new people do something,” said Ribeiro. “To me, that’s not ‘Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.’ There’s one ‘Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.’ Is Will Smith starring in it? No. Then it ain’t no ‘Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.’”

While news regarding any potential castings has also been silent (though it's hard to imagine the project working without its primary actors), it wouldn’t be a terrible idea to see Will Smith cast in a more patriarchal “Uncle Will” role in homage to James Avery's iconic role. Avery, known for playing Uncle Phil, passed away back in 2013.

As it’s been 13 years since the finale of “Fresh Prince” aired, there’s certainly plenty of Banks family antics to catch up on.
