These Brands Are Giving Back on Black Friday

Companies are beginning to catch on that it's a bit contradictory for Black Friday — the shopping "holiday" and consumerism's darling — to fall just one day after Thanksgiving. In fact, this day of giving thanks and sharing with loved ones is often swallowed whole by the rush of early Black Friday sales and anxiety-driven mania to find the best deals. That's why several brands this holiday season are offering Black Friday deals with a greater purpose.

"I’ve never been a fan of Black Friday," admits Peter Sacco, founder and CEO of Adelante. "Frenzied shoppers fighting over the best deals, unrestrained consumerism, worker exploitation ... for me, this holiday can represent capitalism at its worst."

In recognizing that human well-being should be prioritized over profit, Sacco's shoe company Adelante is committed to doing Black Friday differently this year. They're not completely forgoing the spirit of savings (because everyone loves a good deal), but they're doubling down by rewarding their workers while you get to keep some extra cash in your bank account, too. Now through Cyber Monday, shoppers will be treated to a 20% discount at Adelante, and their hard-working, talented craftsmen will be paid an extra 20% for each pair they make by hand, just for you. It's a win-win for everyone during this season of giving.

Adelante has a long-standing commitment to be as socially responsible as possible, regularly paying their Guatemalan craftsmen more than double the market rate — even before this Black Friday bonus. Sacco confessed that he knows this 20% pay boost is not something that his company can realistically maintain in the long run, but he strives to push the limits of Adelante's impact wherever possible.

"I’d much rather reward the hard work of our exceptional artisans than squeeze every last dollar out of a Black Friday promotion," he added.

But Adelante isn't the only brand with a conscience this holiday season.

Men's clothing brand Huckberry has pledged to plant one tree for every order placed on Black Friday, while outdoor gear brand Patagonia continues its decades of supporting grassroots groups that work to alleviate environmental crisis. The Patagonia Action Works program helps connect people with local events, petitions, and volunteer opportunities to benefit the environment. Donations to grassroots efforts can also be made through the site, and Patagonia will match each and every donation made between November 29 and December 31.

Giving back this holiday season doesn't mean that we can't indulge in some great sales and express our love to family and friends by giving gifts we know they'll enjoy. However, it does feel pretty great to get a nice deal, put a smile on a loved one's face, and make an impact for the greater good all at once. It's like the perfect trifecta of holiday goodness.
