Eddie Murphy Returns to Host SNL for the First Time in 35 Years

Eddie Murphy will return to the show that launched him into superstardom as he hosts this weekend's holiday episode of "Saturday Night Live," the final show of the decade.

Murphy first joined the "SNL" cast during its sixth season in 1980 when the young comedian was just 19 years old. After a successful run and countless memorable characters, Murphy departed the show near the end of its ninth season to pursue more movie roles. Aside from a small appearance for SNL's 40th anniversary special in 2015, he has never returned to his roots at Studio 8H.

Until now.

Though Murphy has never hosted "SNL" since his departure in 1984, he did host the show once while he was still a cast member. When his "48 Hrs." co-star Nick Nolte fell ill before his turn as host in season 8, Murphy stepped in as his substitute and even amended the classic opener to declare, "Live from New York, it's the Eddie Murphy Show!"

In the 35 years since he left, Murphy has gone on to become a comedy icon, starring in a number of his own stand-up specials and a slew of blockbusters including "Coming to America," the "Beverly Hills Cop" franchise and this year’s Netflix hit “Dolemite Is My Name.” Most former castmates revisit "SNL" to promote their new projects, at the very least, so why has Murphy never returned to host the show that launched his career?

In 2011, the comedian revealed in a Rolling Stone interview that he stayed away from the show because of one particular David Spade sketch in the mid-90s. During one iteration of the recurring Weekend Update skit, Spade held up a photo of Murphy and stated "Look, children, a falling star. Make a wish."

Murphy felt the comment was a low blow and was offended that the show's producers would even allow the crack at his career to make it to air.

"I made a stink about it, it became part of the folklore," Murphy recalled in the interview. "What really irritated me about it at the time was that it was a career shot. It was like, 'Hey, come on, man, it’s one thing for you guys to do a joke about some movie of mine, but my career? I’m one of you guys."

Eventually, Murphy made his peace with Spade and now he's apparently made his peace with "SNL" as well. No confirmations have been made about which of his classic characters will be reprised, but he has previously said that he hopes to revisit “Mister Robinson’s Neighborhood,” Buckwheat and Gumby.

Find out which skits get revived when Eddie Murphy hosts the December 21 episode of "Saturday Night Live" alongside musical guest Lizzo.
