Most Anticipated Vehicles Releasing in 2020

Few industries see as much year-over-year turnover as the auto industry. Each year, a brand-new model year vehicle rolls onto dealership lots with a shiny new price tag and the promise of being “better than ever.” Sometimes, the new model’s changes are merely small cosmetic alterations that make the new vehicle indistinguishable from its yesteryear counterpart. Other times, they go through full-on makeovers.

In very rare cases, automakers pull out all the stops (figuratively) and release a vehicle unlike anything else in their lineup. Kia did this in 2019 with the Telluride, an entirely new mid-size SUV that became the largest vehicle to sport the Kia badge.

As 2020 nears, the new vehicle cycle is gearing up to roll out yet again. But this upcoming year brings with it a number of noteworthy releases that are much more than simple refreshes. There’s the return of the Ford Bronco, the debut of Rivian’s all-electric R1T truck and a couple next generation Teslas, to name a few – and no, we don’t mean the Cybertruck … yet. Here are the most highly-anticipated vehicles expected to be released in 2020.

Rivian R1T

Rivian R1T

Rivian’s had the automotive industry waiting with bated breath to see its lineup of fully-electric vehicles in action. First up is the R1T, a pickup truck that’s said to feature a 400-mile range, a more than 11,000-pound towing capacity and on-the-fly, adjustable air suspension. It’s even supposed to offer the same kind of blistering acceleration as a Corvette Z06 or Mercedes AMG GT S, sporting a three-second zero-to-60 time.

A bit outrageous to need to go that fast, sure, but the total R1T package (or the prospect of it) is exciting – so long as Rivian actually delivers. The truck’s made appearances at several auto shows, including Overland Expo West in Flagstaff, Arizona, and the company says it’s aiming for a late-2020 release. With unique cargo and customization options, a premium interior and the kind of buzz that goes along with brand new vehicles, expect this to be a hit once it’s finally out.

Ford Bronco

Ford Bronco

The last Ford Bronco to hit dealer lots was a 1996 model year, though the iconic vehicle maintained a massive following, in the past 23 years it’s been dormant. Despite what would seem like a less-than-favorable history (a certain car chase comes to mind), the Bronco’s popularity is as high as ever – and Ford recognized it. For 2020, the automaker plans to bring back the classic rig, much to the satisfaction of its fans.

The new Bronco isn’t simply a rehash of its early-90s kin, however. It’ll feature 2.3-liter turbocharged engine capable of 270 horsepower, a 10-speed automatic transmission and will be available as either a two- or four-door variant. It’ll even feature a removable top a la the Jeep Wrangler. Pricing estimates put it in the low $30,000 range to start, and their figures to a be a range of trim levels to choose from, as well. It’s unknown when exactly in 2020 Ford plans to release the Bronco.

Ford Mustang Mach-E

Ford Mustang Mach-E

Don’t be fooled by the “Mustang” in its name, the Ford Mustang Mach-E isn’t your typical sports car with the blue badge. Instead, the Mach-E is an all-electric crossover from the Michigan-based automaker that looks more like a Tesla (both inside and out) than it does its namesake. But that’s not a bad thing.

The Mach-E will supposedly offer up to 300 miles of range, a premium interior with a massive touchscreen infotainment system, seating for up to five and engines capable of either 255, 332 or 459 horsepower, depending on the trim. Ford debuted its new crossover at the 2019 Los Angeles Auto Show and also announced it would arrive on dealer lots by 2020. Its base trim, the Select, starts at $44,995 while its top trim, the GT, has a price tag of $61,600.

Aston Martin DBX

Aston Martin DBX

If there was ever a family vehicle fit for James Bond, it would be the Aston Martin DBX. The first SUV to sport the Aston Martin badge, the DBX will immediately insert itself into the running for best luxury SUV upon its release in 2020. It will reportedly sport a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine capable of churning out 542 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque, feature a top speed of 181 mph and go from zero-to-60 in just 4.3 seconds – that’s fast.

It looks like an Aston Martin both inside and out, too. With a recognizable front fascia, premium interior technology and a host of comfort features like heated seats, four-zone climate control and spacious seating, the DBX seems to live up to its $192,600 price tag. Expensive, to be sure, but luxury of this kind often is.

Porsche Taycan

Porsche Taycan

Another new entry for a luxury brand is the Porsche Taycan, the first electric vehicle to grace the German automaker’s lineup. As is customary with the brand, the Taycan is a beautifully-styled sedan, and one that figures to go toe-to-toe with the Tesla Model S upon its release. Porsche says it will be able to churn out up to 670 horsepower for its base trim and up to 750 horsepower on the top trim, which should make it feel like a full-on sports car on the road. It even has a two-speed transmission (a rarity for EVs) and a quick-charge electrical system.

Porsche hasn’t shared specifics regarding range, though it’s been speculated to offer anywhere from 225 to 270 miles. When it releases next year, the Taycan will be available in two different trim levels: Turbo for $152,250 and Turbo S for $186,350. A hefty price tag, but most things Porsche often are – this also happens to be one of the automaker’s most exciting new releases in years.

Toyota Supra

Toyota Supra

After a long hiatus, the crowd-favorite Toyota Supra is making a return in 2020, and it brings with it shades of Supra past while still making it seem completely new. The car plans to have a six-cylinder engine capable of 335 horsepower, as well as a standard automatic transmission across all trims – unfortunately, this means there won’t be a manual option (for now).

Toyota says it’ll feature Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility, a touchscreen infotainment system, heated seats and a stereo system from JBL. The Supra isn’t terribly large in its interior, so taller drivers may feel a bit claustrophobic. This also means there isn’t a ton of cargo room – but who’s buying a Supra for cargo space? It’ll be offered in three trim levels upon release: The 3.0 for $50,920, the 3.0 Premium for $54,920 and the Launch Edition for $56,180.

Tesla (Model Y and Roadster)

Tesla (Model Y

Tesla appears to be planning not one but two releases for 2020, and since the brand tends to be mostly mum on release dates, we wanted to include both. First up is the Roadster, an electric sports car that the automaker says will have an astounding zero-to-60 time of just 1.9 seconds. That’s bolt-you-to-your-seat fast. It’s rumored to feature three electric motors (one in the front, two in the back) and will come in an all-wheel-drive variant. Pricing is unknown but Tesla said it hopes to start selling the Roadster sometime in 2020.

However, Tesla also appears to be gearing up to release the Model Y, a compact crossover that should be as wallet-friendly as the previously released Model 3. The Model Y will, of course, be a bit bigger than its economical kin, and will offer available third row seating, a range of up to 300 miles and available AWD. Think of it as a family-oriented Model 3; it’s bigger, has more cargo space and can seat more people. Like all things Tesla, expect a lot of excitement and fervor when it releases in 2020.

Innovation in the auto industry is a never-ending game, and the vehicles above show just how promising the 2020 slate of vehicle releases figures to be. With a full slate of fully-electric crossovers, luxury SUVs and returning classics, there’s something for everyone, too.
